In the first half of the seventh century new rulers came to the Holy Land, the Arab Muslims. But though the Holy Land – and indeed greater Syria – was to fall under Muslim rule, the Christian presence and dominance did not disappear. In the following generations the Christian Byzantium would even reconquer some of its lost territories, and in Jerusalem the Holy Sepulcher would still be the dominating building, being the center of the city and witnessing of the Christian message of the salvation of Christ. But this was not to continue:

Al-Aqsa Mosque is often mistaken for the Dome of the Rock, but is in fact the gray mosque south of Dome of the Rock, and though today being a newer and maybe less impressive building, it is indeed the oldest construction and the more Holy of the two - Read our article on al-Aqsa Mosque:

The Holy Sepulcher – also known as the Church of Resurrection – is one of the most important and famous of all churches. It was here that Jesus was crucified, buried, and resurrected, once being situated outside the Old City, but today being the center of the Christian Quarter.

Read about one of the most central sites in Jerusalem, the Western Wall, known in Hebrew as HaKotel - The Wall. This remnant of the one renowned Temple of Herod, has played a central role in Jewish religion and identity since the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE:

Peter has written a piece on the conflict between the Western concept of the individual's right, and the religious conception of the obligations of the individual towards the (religious) community:
