Osteria Coppa

Have you ever had handmade Scialatielle pasta? Originally created in Naples, Italy and pronounced shall-uh-dee-ly this authentic Italian pasta has a wonderful thick and chewy texture. Top it with spicy marinara, tomato, eggplant, basil and freshly grated ricotta salata cheese and we call it a little piece of Italian heaven!

Named a Michelin Guide “Bay Area Bib Gourmand Pick” and one of the “10 Hot New Restaurants in the Bay Area” by Zagat, Osteria Coppa specializes in fresh, modern Italian cuisine.  We feature handcrafted pasta, hand stretched thin-crust Neapolitan style pizza, antipasti, house cured salumi, and other Italian specialties.  Our menu changes regularly, based on the offerings of local purveyors, artisans and farmers, and we are committed to using the freshest, most flavorful seasonal products we can find.  We also support and use organic, natural, and sustainable ingredients when possible.

Located in downtown San Mateo, our kitchen is led by highly talented Executive Chef Chanan Kamen, who perfected his artisanal techniques at San Francisco restaurants Quince and Jardinere, and New York restaurants Picholine and Tabla.  He further honed his skills by working at seven different restaurants in Italy, in seven different regions, each of which bears a minimum of one Michelin star.

The team behind Osteria Coppa also includes partners Paul and Julie Shenkman and acclaimed chef/partner Lewis Rossman, who own our sister restaurant Sam’s Chowder House in Half Moon Bay.   Paul Shenkman previously founded Pasta Moon and Cetrella Bistro & Café, both in Half Moon Bay.

In addition to our dining room and full bar, we offer outside patio seating, complete with shade umbrellas for sunny peninsula days, and cozy heaters for cooler days.

Handmade pasta & other unfussy Tuscan fare in an airy, contemporary space with a bustling bar.- Google
"Chocolate lava cake and ricotta/chocolate mousse desserts were great."
"This is not a traditional Italian place."

I had a mixed green salad and spaghetti special last night. Both are great. The biggest mistake was ordering the platter, which was supposed to be a popular item there. The duck pate tasted weird, the cold cut was nothing but ordinary like pack of cold cut you would buy from supermarket. The platter subtracted one star here. The guy who served us was confusing. I wasn't sure if he knew what he was doing and was rude to ask me to hand him the plate.

Awesome eatery. The fact they have Gluten Free Pizza is awesome. The drinks were mixed well and priced ok. Knowledge of GF preparation/handling was good

I've worked by downtown San Mateo for almost a year now and just discovered this amazing restaurant! I have seriously been missing out! I dropped in for a quick lunch with a friend from college. He was running late, so I decided to grab a drink at the table first. On the iPad drink menu they had a very nice selection of beers on tap and in the bottle and had a brief description and review of each drink that they offered. What stood out the most was the Allagash White-you almost never see this beer on this side of the country! With my beer in hand I looked at the menu and found it difficult to decide what to order- not because there wasn't anything that stood out, but because I wanted to try a little bit of it all! In the end the frugal side of me won and I ended getting what I was thinking about anyway: the lunch special. It comes with the soup of the day or a salad and an entree, which was any sandwich on the menu or a choice of the following three pizzas : sausage, four cheese, and a maragrita. I got the house salad which was nicely portioned with a nice bed of lettuce, peaches, and nuts all drizzled with a refreshing vinaigrette. My entree was supposed to be just a sausage pizza- it was anything but that. My pizza did come with sausage...and a hefty serving of mushrooms and prosciutto! (See the pic I added to the restaurant page) It looked amazing and it tasted just as great! I had to stop myself from eating the second half because I still had a whole afternoon of work left! The lunch special was only $14! Lunch at Osteria Coppa's is definitely hard to beat in terms of portion to price ratio as well as ambiance and staff interaction. If you can, request to sit in the area that the bartender is covering- he knows his beers and wines and what lunch items go well with what you're drinking-or vice versa!

I've been here on various occasions, maybe 3-4 times now. Have to say that I always leave impressed and satisfied. Coppa provides City-quality Italian in the heart of downtown San Mateo. I think this is a great value for the sophisticated urban ambiance and the expert preparations of house-made wood fired(?) pizza and pasta. We never pass up the fritto misto with fresh shrimp, squid and Meyer lemons (seriously delicious). Service is friendly, but can be a little slow and relaxed. Depending on your mood and your night this could be a plus or a minus.

I have eaten there several times and each time the food is very good. The menu is somewhat limited but there are daily specials that add good variety. HOWEVER, I find the service very, very poor. The problem is not slow service (as you would normally expect), it is intrusive and rushed service. I have felt rushed each time I have been there to the point that I will not go there again.

Great spot for good food with attention to detail. The bar is fantastic with a low profile TV so that you can follow game without a rowdy sports atmosphere. Perfect for happy hour or a night out.

Had lunch with a group of office mates to celebrate a member leaving. We ordered two antipasto dishes that never arrived. I ordered the Salmon and eggplant Caponada which I had to send back because it was way too raw in the middle. It took so long to receive my food back that my fellow workers had already finished their lunches. One member ordered dessert and myself and another ordered cappuccinos. The coffees came after the bill came and our fellow employee had finished her dessert. The waiter seemed oblivious to the errors and never even checked on us. I think the owner was the one who brought our coffees.
