In which I talk Rutger Hauer, xenomorph-alikes, 90s action movie weapons, and the 1992 serial killer/monster "classic" Split Second:
Given my longstanding affection for Rutger Hauer and monster movies, it should come as no surprise that I watched Split Second--probably a few times--when it was at the video rental section of my l...

My annual Year in Creatures had a lot more contenders this year than in recent memory!
Well, 2015 may have been the big year of high-number sequels in long-running franchises, but it bucked recent tradition in one major way: For the first time in a long time, the majority of movie mo...

Just back from a somewhat impromptu road trip to North Carolina for Christmas. As such, I have missed literally everything that happened online in the last six days. Hopefully you all had a good time and nothing irreplaceable burned down.

"Mr. Grey probably belongs–and he probably would be quite flattered for my saying so–in the same category as Mike Mignola, someone who is steeped in the same dark waters, who knows all the films and folklore, but uses these influences to create a highly intelligent form of pop-horror."

Another very kind review of Painted Monsters. Besides being quite flattered by the comparison, as predicted, I also couldn't really ask for a nicer description of my writing than "highly intelligent pop-horror."

"This is recommended to readers yearning for a trip down a mist-shrouded memory lane, back to a time when Lugosi was king and tales of ghosts and goblins filled our youthful hearts with joyful dread."

By a margin, my most-visited post of 2015 was my review of Deep in the Darkness. Apparently there's a big audience for me rambling about mediocre mole people movies...
I'm a sucker for mole people, ask anyone. CHUDs, Morlocks, really any kind of (preferably ancient) subterranean race of humanoid monsters. Bonus points if they're tied in with some sort of hollow e...

Orrin Grey is a skeleton who likes monsters. When asked, he claims to mostly write oubliettes.
Introduction
I'm a writer, editor, amateur film scholar, and monster expert. My first collection of supernatural stories, Never Bet the Devil & Other Warnings was released by Evileye Books in 2012. I also co-edited Fungi, an anthology of fungus-themed stories for Innsmouth Free Press, where I also write a regular column on vintage horror cinema. I'm a big, big fan of Mike Mignola, and I'll talk about him a lot around here. The rest of the time, I'll probably be talking about monster movies.

As far as circling goes, feel free to circle me. Almost everything I post is public. If I don't circle you back right away, don't feel bad. I don't always keep up with that as well as I'd like, and sometimes people get lost in the shuffle. Just drop me a comment and introduce yourself or something.

I just bought a pre-owned Saturn Aura from Dominic at Bud Brown Volkswagen and I love the car, and the whole experience was a real pleasure. Dominic and everyone else at Bud Brown were friendly, helpful, and no-pressure and they got us in and out with the minimum amount of fuss. I've had some bad experiences buying cars in the past, but I would definitely go back to Bud Brown the next time I need to buy a car.
