Teenage years are complex, full of questions, and can feel void of direction. Developmental changes happen at different rates but some patterns are vivid and can be used to determine how to help a growing teenager. Not all adolescent changes happen at once so recognizing specific behaviors in relation to the changes occurring can be helpful in providing direction to the growing young adult.

Humans tend to appreciate predictability, especially concerning social interactions. The moments we consider cringe-worthy are often because the situation is unpredictable and uncomfortable. What would it look like to counter the instinct reaction to cringe? Instead, if we embrace the uncomfortable, there may be more opportunities for social engagement and growth than we thought possible.

We cannot discredit emotions as valid experiences. Emotional pain changes the way we interact with the world around us and to categorize it as an excuse is to prevent healthy healing for all emotionally wounded.
