In Austria, a tiny marzipan pig is often given as a New Year lucky charm known as a Glücksbringer. Pigs have long been a symbol of prosperity and were venerated in ancient Germanic and Norse mythology. Happy New Year to friends, colleagues and readers of my Only In Guides. +British Guild of Travel Writers

The Telegraph travel writer Adrian Bridge has described my 'Only in Vienna' as "an invaluable guide to the city's hidden corners". Adrian spent time in the city recently as part of a choir preparing to sing Mozart's Requiem at the exact hour of the composer's death in 1791. Read his fascinating piece below.

A very nice review for Only in Boston by travel writer and blogger guru Stuart Forster of www.goeat.do.com. Stuart describes the book as "informative and engaging" and approves of how it goes "beyond the obvious...providing some great nuggets of information about the city's heritage and attractions".

"Author Duncan JD Smith knows his stuff. He's selected over 100 locations all of which harbour peculiar stories or features." (www.londonist.com). Published by The Urban Explorer, "Only in London" goes off the beaten track and tells the city's story through an eclectic mix of unusual historic locations. From Roman Londinium and Shakespeare’s Globe to Winston Churchill’s bunker and Banksy's street art. Discover more at www.onlyinguides.com. +British Guild of Travel Writers

My "Only in Boston" guide has been highly commended at the British Guild of Travel Writers' Awards 2018 staged at the Savoy Hotel in London. There was stiff competition from publishing giants such as Bradt Travel Guides, so as an independently written and published work, the book did very well. It is great to be acknowledged by one's peers in this way. +British Guild of Travel Writers www.onlyinguides.com

Halloween in Boston - the American city is the home of literary horror. Edgar Allan Poe was born here and was inspired to write "The Cask of Amontillado" wherein men take revenge by burying another alive. A sculpture near Boston Common shows him with an evil-looking raven. H. P. Lovecraft also spent time here writing "Pickman's Model" about something ghastly in the cellar of a missing artist.
