Omar Ha-Redeye is a Toronto lawyer and legal academic. He holds a JD from Western Law, and an LLM from Osgoode Hall.
His practice background includes civil litigation, employment, and labour law. He has a particular interest in various areas of health law, including personal injury, consent and capacity, medical malpractice, occupational health and safety, and health policy, and various areas of reputation management, such as online defamation, crisis communications, public relations. His work in employment and labour relations usually focuses on workplace disputes and practices in the health care setting. His office is based out of Fleet Street Law, a legal incubator in Toronto.
He teaches law and ethics at Ryerson University and is an instructor at and Seneca College and Centennial College. Dozens of paralegal, law clerk, and office administration students have completed their internships under his supervision, including Ontario law students completing a recognized program through their law school.
Omar is active in the local bar, and is the past Chair of the Young Lawyers Division (Toronto) of the Ontario Bar Association (OBA). He has sat on the Board of Directors for the OBA, and is an elected Council Member for several consecutive years..
In 2011 he was named one of the top 12 social media influencers practicing law in Canada. He was presented the Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2013 by the Governor General for his contributions to society and professional achievements.
Omar is a regular blogger with legal websites such as Slaw, and is frequently contacted by the media. He has several publications in the areas of health law, online reputation, and labour law. He is repeatedly invited to judge legal competitions for law students across North America.
Omar is a graduate of the Masters in Law (LLM) degree at Osgoode Hall Law School. He completed this degree with a focus on health law, and with coursework in Advanced Trial Advocacy. He was the recipient of the Osgoode Professional Development LLM Bursary in 2014.
Omar is also a graduate (Juris Doctor) of the law program at the University of Western Ontario. He won or placed in more than half of Western Law's oral advocacy competitions, making the finals in all of the school's upper-year appellate moots. He has received numerous awards for advocacy, including the Patricia DeGuire Cup for Best Oralist in the Koskie Minsky LLP Diversity Moot, the Justice C.D. Stewart Trophy for best team in the Lerners LLP Cup, and winner of the Borden Ladner Gervais LLP Client Counselling Competition.
During his time in law school he published with Oxford University Press (ISBN 9780195560558), CRC Press (Taylor & Francis Group) (ISBN 9781439821299), and the Windsor Review of Legal and Social Issues (Vol. 1, No. 1, April 2010). He also spoke at a number of professional venues while studying law, including at the United Nations, to a diplomatic delegation from China, as well as several academic conferences and post-secondary institutions.
Omar is one of the few law students in Canada to participate in multiple law exchange programs with other universities internationally, including partnerships with the University of Toronto, Thomas M. Cooley Law School, Whittier Law School, Bar-Ilan University, Baylor University, and Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara. He received two international CALI Excellence for the Future Awards in academic achievement for the highest performance in law courses in the holocaust and genocide and religious legal systems.
He was actively involved in his law school community, holding the role of President of the Black Law Students Association (BLSA), the Health Law Association, and the Mature Students Club. As Magister of Rand Inn he lead Western Law's chapter of Phi Delta Phi (ΦΔΦ), an international legal fraternity. He founded the Western Law Review Association, a group dedicated to establishing the Western Journal of Legal Studies, and created the largest law school blog and podcast in Canada at Law is Cool.
Life Before Law
Prior to law school, Omar began his clinical career in Nuclear Medicine in the U.S. While working at a veteran institution in the U.S., he began his research into radiological hazards. He continued working in the field of nuclear medicine for a major health care system, before taking on various administrative roles in the areas of emergency management.
He completed an additional degree in health administration, where he graduated as the only student in his class with honours, and was presented the Dennis Mock Student Leadership Award for community involvement. After finishing a certificate in corporate communications & public relations he worked briefly in communications for a provincial cabinet member.
Omar has operated as a Hazardous Materials (HazMat) respondent and First Responder, and has field experience in South-East Asia after the 2004 tsunami. In the past he has consulted for business, NGOs, and governmental entities on subjects such as ethics, media issues, disaster management and crisis communications.
