Japanese artist Azuma Makoto has strapped six GoPro cameras to balloons carrying plants — like a a fifty-year-old bonsai tree — and launched them into space for his project Exobiotica. The resulting documentation is stunning and surreal, with photos of earthly organisms suspended above our atmosphere.

It is actually " Shai-an"

Why X?

Mathematics uses a variety of symbols to represent everything from known values and  specific numbers to unknown values. Characters from many sources have been introduced. The most common symbols are the basic mathematical functions (+, -, x and /) and the character to represent the number pi (𝜫). One small level higher includes percentage (%), greater and less than (>, <) and not equal to (≠). From this point we start increasing the variety of symbols with a corresponding increase in the complexity of the Math. At this level we might include summation (∑), integration (∫), infinity (∞) and the smallest infinity (ℵ). Beyond this there are scores of additional characters that are employed; these tend to be found in specific mathematical concepts (for example: set theory) or particular sciences (Physics, Chemistry, etc.) There is one character used that appears to cross all boundaries from Mathematics to Physics, to Economics to literary, theological debates and even pirate maps. The letter X appears as the unknown quantity; a near universal symbol for expressing the unknown.

The question is - why that particular symbol? Why X?

There are four theories as to why X has become the ‘go to’ symbol for an unknown quantity. The first theory is that the word for ‘unknown’ in Greek is ‘xenos’. This theory suggests that since mathematicians have a penchant for using Greek characters, this became the obvious choice. Rather than writing the full xenos, they simply shortened it to X.

The second theory developed from practical application. In the past, typeface had to be set by hand. In addition to that, printers did not have an unlimited supply of each letter. Most mathematical works were written in French or Latin and both languages have a very limited need for the letter x. By selecting X, it increased the speed with which mathematical books and papers could be published as well as simplifying the process for the printers themselves.

Terry Moore, director of the Radius Foundation, has suggested a somewhat convoluted path to the origin of the X factor. During the Golden Age of Islam, Islamic mathematicians developed and expanded algebra far beyond what had been done previously. (Note: the word ‘algebra’ is from the Arabic word ‘al-jebr’ meaning the reunion of broken parts.) When detailing an equation, the Islamic mathematicians used the word ‘al-shalan’ (unknown thing) for the unknown variable. As the Islamic movement spread across Africa and into Spain, they introduced their concepts for algebra. Unfortunately, Spanish has no ‘sh’ sound and Moore suggests that they substituted the ‘ck’ sound. The sound is similar to the Greek letter chi which is written as Χ. He suggests that the Spanish then introduced algebra to the remainder of Europe using the X (chi) rather than the Arabic al-shalan. Moore has a TED talk on this subject where he expounds on this theory in greater detail.

The prominent theory is that X as the unknown was introduced by the French mathematician Rene Descartes. The first appearance of X as the unknown was in papers published by Descartes. His system used early letters of the alphabet (a,b,c...) for knowable variables and later letters (x, y, z) for unknown variables. Given this system, it is possible that a printer did suggest X as the dominant unknown in order to save printing costs and time.
