Old cast iron fireplace can be easily revamped by painting with fire-rated paint. White Knight Hi-Temp is a great fire-resistant paint. It comes in black colour, flat finish and can resist temperatures up to 540C.

Badly weathered but structurally sound timber deck can be revamped by painting in brown. Pick the brown shade close to the timber colour. This way possible future marks or scratches will not be as noticeable.

Revamp old flaking steel door handles by simply sparing the outside surfaces with metallic paint in a can. Replacing old door handles for an easy and cheap property upgrade is the absolute classic of cosmetic renovation. But if you want to keep your budget to the minimum you can make upgrades even smaller - simply spray old door handles with metallic paint.
You will be surprised at the difference it makes! The handles will become nice and shiny again as if they just arrived from the hardware store. And your only expense was $4.50 for the can of metallic paint.
You will need to unscrew and remove visible parts of the handle - the front plate and the handle itself, and to spray them separately. Give 3 coats of paint, allowing an hour or so drying time in between the coats. No preparation is required. Just make sure the handles are clean from oil and dirt before you start spraying them. If the old surface is flaking badly, you can give it a light sanding.
The paint will last few years. It will not peel, but will gradually wipe off in areas where you touch it the most. (I tested it on my property a few years back) You can respray it again if you wish.

Painting window and door grills in black will make them the least noticeable both from inside and from the outside. On another hand, white window grills are the most noticeable. Unless you have a reason to highlight the grill and to “hide” the window – paint the grills in black. It’s perfectly fine to have your window frame or cast metal details of your facade painted in one colour and grills in black. Just take a look here to see the difference the grill colour makes

If your entry door is exposed to the hot sun – choosing a lighter colour will ensure the paint last longer. Paint expands as it heats up and contracts as it cools. The greater are these expansion cycles, the faster the paint will age, lose flexibility and start to peel or blister. The dark paint heats more than the light colours. It will expand much more too. Choosing the light colour will ensure your door paint will last longer even in full sun. Check this post for the great ideas of the entry doors colours.

Never paint pre-70s building with peeling or old top paint until without testing for lead paint first. Lead paint is most often found in exterior or woodwork paint. But it can be on any surface. Similarly to asbestos, lead paint is not dangerous when it is stable and left undisturbed. It is the dust from peeling, flaking or sanding the paint surface that is dangerous to health. Never attempt sanding or burning the lead paint. Use professionals to remove it. You can read about lead paint, its signs, and health danger here.

Paint stained woodwork in off-white enamel to modernise old-fashioned house. Strange, but people are often emotional and hesitant about painting stained woodwork, even if it is damaged and lifeless. In all years I was a painter, I have not seen a client who did not wow at the end results and did not wish his woodwork was painted sooner. It literally takes decades off your house and makes it so much brighter. This works literally for all types of properties - from character homes to ex-house commission, and to modern homes.

To save on future exterior timber maintenance use Flood & Deck decking oil for all varnishing surfaces. It is the longest lasting timber varnish product on Australian market today. Manufacturer recommends revarnishing every 3 years (compare to the standard annual revarnishing for other products).

House exterior paint is dull, lifeless, and had mould and mildew build up, but the paint is solid? Try high-pressure wash it. Sometimes results are so good – your paintwork looks almost brand new, and the house does not need a painting for another few years.
