I'd like to share with all of you what has been churning in my heart and mind throughout this blessed day!

What is prayer? Where is God?

Have you ever pondered on the meaning of prayer?  How many times have you told someone that you’d pray for him or for her? In my case, I feel it deeply when somebody tells me “You are in my prayers.” Why do I feel so touched by such wonderful words? What is prayer? Really! What do you mean when you say you are praying for someone? I guess most people relate to prayer as lifting up our hearts and souls to God. However, this assumes that God is somewhere on a higher plane outside of us. This is one major concept shared by a lot of people that somehow, God is somewhere above us floating in some celestial heaven, ready to come to our assistance when invoked upon through prayer. And they begin to question God’s authority and justice or mercy if He doesn’t intercede during some dreadful events such as major catastrophes. If we all share this concept, how can we believe in a just and merciful God who allows the killing of innocent people? Because I love God and I believe with all my heart in a merciful and loving God, I have searched deep in my soul on this issue. And I have come up with my own interpretation of prayer and how it all fits in with our concept of God.

God is undefinable! The reason why there are a lot of controversy on how to define God is that the human mind is incapable of defining the undefinable, which is God. All we can do is point to the mystery that is God. There is a passage in the Bible that says that now, we can see God through a glass, darkly,—that is imperfectly, enigmatically. And that upon death we can see God face to face in Jesus—unveiled and without obscurity. This is all possible because of Jesus, who has redeemed us from sin to enjoy eternal life. Only then can we see God face to face in His absolute grandeur that will quench every thirst and satisfy every longing when time is no more! God is the ground of being—the source of love and the source of life. God is omnipresent, that is, He is everywhere. He is within us as well as outside of us. He permeates all of being in all His creation. Evolutionists believe in the “big bang”—the beginning of matter and life. But all that must have come from a source—the Source of all creation that is God.

As God is outside of us—in all of His creation, God is also inside of us. He is in the pit of our soul—throbbing and echoing all the good that is within us—the source of life and the source of all the love and goodness that clamors to surface from way deep within the innermost recesses of our mind and spirit. And when we pray, we strive to get in touch with that inner source of life and energy within us. And when we reach and establish that connection, we experience a great feeling of elation that is too enigmatic to explain because that connection puts us in touch with God. And the experience is beyond words to explain. This to me is prayer! In this process of union with God, you are able to share with Him all your dearest joys as well as your deepest sadness, your concern for loved ones, your hopes and dreams for family and friends and all of mankind—that, to me, is prayer in the purest sense of the word. This is why I feel touched and blessed beyond words when someone tells me, “You are in my prayers!”

How do you define prayer? What do you feel when you pray? As I have shared my thoughts with you, kindly share yours as well as I am eager to hear them. We all learn from each other and I would love to learn from your experience of prayer. Thank you and never forget that God loves you and I am praying for you!
