Okay, this IS funny. It's safe, don't worry, it's genuinely gigglemaking.

It took more than the usual amount of work, but I finally got Pantheon Mail (formerly Geary) snapped! Still a lot of work to do, it doesn't seem friendly to being relocated, but the +elementary developers have been helping me each step of the way. Also, I'm learning Vala now...

Inspired by a post from +OMG! Ubuntu! about getting gedit 3.10 installed on 16.04 LTS I thought I'd try and make a Snap to avoid all that tedious PPA stuff.

With some help from +Sebastien Bacher we got it mostly working. There are a few caveats; settings are not stored yet and first run is a little slow.

If you want to give it a go you can download the snap binary from here:
http://www.whizzy.org/gedit310_1_amd64.snap

and then: sudo snap install gedit310_1_amd64.snap --devmode
(dev mode is still needed at the moment, working on that next). To run it use:

$ gedit310

Or for more fun clone this github repo:

https://github.com/8none1/gedit310

Install snapcraft (sudo apt install snapcraft) and then run snapcraft from the dir in to which you cloned that repo. Then sit back for 5 mins and watch snapcraft work it's magic and pop out a .snap!

I think this brings a new dimension to Snaps on the desktop; we've been talking about being able to track the latest upstreams more easily, but you can of course install an older version of an application that you especially like just as easily.

Snapcraft getting shiny

A new fresh release of Snapcraft, the tool to create snaps is out. Check out what it brings to developers!
Snapcraft 2.12: an ecosystem of parts, qmake and gulp. Snapcraft 2.12 is here and is making its way to your 16.04 machines today. This release takes Snapcraft to a whole new level. For example, instead of defining your own project parts, you can now use and share them from a common, open, ...

The scopes of the Meizu PRO 5 Ubuntu Edition give you related content on one screen, instead of hiding it behind different apps.

+Filip Dorosz I know and I'm very glad that Canonical is looking to move things forward but what I'm saying is: "... don't even exist >>currently<< (like in a production) but are being >>advertised as included<< (in the product like right now)." I think that can cause some bad reviews. It's straight up lying. But as for me, I think they should be more transparent with their design work and future of it but on the pages appropriate and dedicated to that, not on the adds of current devices lol.

With snapcraft 2.12 you get access to the Parts Ecosystem. Check out what +Sergio Schvezov, one of Snapcraft's core developers has to say.
Today I am going to be discussing parts . This is one of the pillars of snapcraft (together with plugins and the lifecycle ). For those not familiar, this is snapcraft's general purpose landing page, http://snapcraft.io/ but if you are a developer and have already been introduced to this new ...

The times when you'd have to wait until the next OS release to get app updates are gone: you can now get the latest Blender snap and many more directly from the store. Good work +Zack Casey making Blender 2.77 available just a click away!

+Drew Fustini - no, that's Sam, our corporate sales guy :)

I did the driving, the fireworks store, jumping in the pool, and running through the park (the drone shot).

Sam did all the first scenes (fire alarm, jumping out the window, etc), jumping into the corvette (both times), and of course the sexy dancing with the sparklers. This was his pin-up calendar shoot.

This was crazy fun to work on. I'm very happy everyone gets to see it now.

And that penguin suit was so f-in' hot that one person really couldn't do it the whole time anyway :P

+Oliver Grawert thx for the clarification; I was just careful, because different terms most of the time mean different things; and sometimes companies use similar sounding words to make people/journalists mix things up to hide some important detail/disadvantage :-/
