The Lab

At Olive, we have invested heavily in the most advanced equipment for our brand new lab. However, there is much more than just the hardware that we use that makes our lab so special.

All the egg and embryo handling, sperm injection procedures (ICSI) and embryo biopsies are performed in this lab and we have done everything to make sure that it is the very best lab environment it can be for these purposes. We have installed a very intricate air control system which maintains a precisely controlled level of air circulation, positive air pressure and very low particle count within the embryology lab. This ensures that we maintain the safest environment for eggs, sperm and embryos.

To ensure the safety of the sperm, eggs and embryo, all of the storage tanks where sperm, eggs and embryos are kept frozen are equipped with alarms that protect against anything that could go wrong. Our laboratory staff is on 24 /7 alert to deal with any issues that arise.

But beyond our technology, what really sets us apart is the outstanding group of scientists that run our lab. At the lead is Dr. Salaheldin Abdelgadir, PhD, who has been a laboratory director for nearly 20 years with certification as a Technical Supervisor (TS) and High Complexity Lab Director (HCLD) from the American Board of Bioanalysis. What is unique to Olive is that we have the only PhD-educated lab director in the province who works on-site, full time to maintain strict and direct supervision of all laboratory processes and procedures. While some labs may rely on off-site, contracted lab directors who work remotely or only on a part-time basis, Dr. Abdelgadir is exclusively dedicated to Olive.

Working with Dr. Abdelgadir is an entire team of amazing embryologists and andrologists. These highly educated and experienced individuals are unsurpassed in their technical skills, their passion, and their dedication to allow us to provide the most advanced, successful, and progressive care possible.

WHAT IS THE EMBRYOSCOPE™?

The EmbryoScope™ is an IVF incubator system with a built-in camera that provides time-lapse photos of embryo development from fertilization to transfer.

The device takes high resolution images every 10 minutes and the embryos never leave the environmentally controlled incubator. The images provide the embryologist with detailed information about the timing of cell divisions and other critical events that indicate the health of the embryo.

Meet Our Doctors:
DR JASON HITKARI MD, FRCSC
Dr Hitkari is co-founder and co-director of Olive Fertility Centre.

Dr Hitkari is co-founder and co-director of Olive Fertility Centre and a clinical professor at UBC. After completing his training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of British Columbia (where he received awards for clinical teaching and research), Dr Hitkari went on to do a formal fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Toronto. Upon completing his fellowship, he joined Genesis Fertility Centre as a co-director. In 2013, Dr Hitkari co-founded Olive Fertility Centre where he continues as Co-Director.

Dr Hitkari discovered his passion for fertility medicine early in his training. He found specializing in fertility allowed him to take time and develop a personal relationship with each patient, helping them make the best choice for their own situation. He also loved the challenge of new technology and the excitement of collaborating with a team of other specialists, including highly skilled embryologists and andrologists.

As a dedicated patient advocate, Dr.Hitkari serves as Board Member for the Infertility Awareness Association of Canada and is a member of a small, multi-disciplinary group attempting to lobby the provincial government for treatment funding for people struggling with infertility.

In addition to his dedication to patient care, Dr. Hitkari has a special interest in education and is currently heavily involved in reproductive and infertility education for medical students at UBC. He coordinates the Reproduction Seminars for the Obstetrics and Gynecology resident physicians and also lectures extensively throughout the year to family practitioners, family practice residents, allied health professionals, and gynecologists. Dr Hitkari is also an examiner in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, which is the body that examines physicians who have completed training. Dr Hitkari was a former member of the Non-Hospital Committee at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC, involved in overseeing the accreditation and regulation of surgical facilities.

He was thrilled to receive the UBC Medical Undergraduate Class of 2012 and Class of 2014 Outstanding Educator Awards and is most proud of being the recipient of the H. Hill Humanitarian award for exceptional patient care.

A 30 year resident of Vancouver, Dr Hitkari loves everything about the city. And despite two young daughters, two dogs, and a busy practice, he still finds time to sing in the band Clancy’s Angels.
