Living in the Bay Area, I had forgotten about the concept of 'Autumn'. Fortunately Minneapolis, Minnesota didn't -- and delivered a lovely Halloween weekend for walking around downtown. (After visiting Portland recently too, I'm starting to think smaller cities might be on to something...)

The view from the back yard of our ski house rental in Spanish Peaks, Big Sky, Montana. Montana really is gorgeous, I can't stress this enough.

Annoying video title, but actually a really nice visualization of people's ideal wealth distribution, the perceived wealth distribution, and the actual distribution.
This pretty much speaks for itself. At 1:05, I get a rude awakening. At 1:41, he starts talking about you. At 2:24, he says a bad word. At 3:50, he kind of breaks my brain. At 4:50, he lets you know how broke you really are. At 5:20, he rubs it in. And at 5:50, he points out that reality isn't close to what we think it is.

What do you want to do this weekend? Beach? Mountains? Why not both?! I was pleasantly surprised to find that the beaches around Lake Tahoe are really nice, not too crowded, and serve up gorgeous views (and very comfortable weather).

Thanks to +Nicholas Edelman for taking me exploring even with my busted knee!

A light (and hot!) hike out around Tucson, AZ this past weekend. Saw my first Saguaros (there's a picture in there of me next to one, for a sense of scale...) and more species of cactus than I knew could grow in one place. Pretty exotic - definitely recommend (especially during seasons when the seven waterfalls that we didn't make it to might actually be running :))

90s not great but there's nothing to complain about. Once it hits triple digits, then you can complain if you must.
It's the people who complain about the 50 degree winters that upset me.

Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Norris Geyser basin, loads of bison, elk, and one bald eagle -- all accessible only on snow vehicles (in our case, snowmobiles). Super cool - particularly all the rivers flowing in -8 degree weather due to all the hot springs in the area.

Today's pretty views are brought to you by the letter M, for Monterey, California, and the number 17, for 17-mile-drive (which turned into a surprisingly hilly 30+ miles). Spontaneous bike rides FTW! (Map goo.gl/dC4uHt)

After a hardk0r 200-mile-run-in-the-rain weekend for my friends running the Ragnar relay (Ultra version) from SF to Calistoga, CA (I was helping out as one of the mandatory volunteers each team needs to provide), the team, supporters, and volunteers took it easy on Sunday, hitting up a few vineyards and one burger joint on the way back to the South Bay.

California wine country seems to just want to be photographed - each place was gorgeous! Pictures are mostly from the Francis Ford Coppola winery, but also from Miner Family Winery and Robert Mondavi.

Also, might just have to do this one day when my ACL heals: http://www.ragnarrelay.com/race/napavalley

A wintery summertime hike over Memorial Day weekend to Aloha lake near South Lake Tahoe.

Started easy enough hiking through a few miles of trail and some boulders, and then for the second half, the trail disappeared entirely under a cover of snow. Existing tracks went every which way, so we had to rely on a compass and the sun (since we didn't know the declination...) and our trusty Tom Harrison map of the area to bushwack for a couple hours before (finally) finding the lake.

Lovely little place - finally made it over there on a Saturday night after having it come up in search results for a few weeks. We had the Kale chips, Pupusa, Quesadilla, and the homemade red Sangria. The food was delicious and filling (the quinoa as a side was a nice alternative to the rice you usually get). The Sangria was mostly fruit (yay - the wait staff brought us spoons at the end to eat up all the fruit as a bonus dessert) and was more interesting and yummier than most I've had. I loved the personal attention - the lady taking our order seemed to also be in charge of the food (maybe she was the owner?) and told us to let her know how the quinoa was (she was trying a new recipe) and talked about the "secret homemade recipe" for the Sangria. Extremely reasonable prices too - hope this place takes off!
