In 1987, an ophthalmologist & his wife began using #BOTOX to control strabismus, a disorder caused by uncontrollable eye muscle movements. Patients who were given BOTOX to control these contractions noticed that the wrinkles around their eyes improved. This led to its use as a cosmetic treatment, as well as other medical conditions, including migraines, neck spasms, and even depression! #Sarasota

On 5/1/1865, freed slaves gathered in Charleston to commemorate fallen Union soldiers & the end of the Civil War. 3 years later, Gen. John Logan issued an order making 5/30/1868 #DecorationDay, this was the 1st #MemorialDay - a day “for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country". #Sarasota

May is #MelanomaAwareness month. These #SkinCancer Prevention Guidelines will keep you sun-safe this #MemorialDay weekend and all year round:

• Seek the shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM.
• Don’t get burned.
• Avoid tanning and never use UV tanning beds.
• Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.
• Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
• Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every 2 hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.
• Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreens should be used on babies over the age of six months.
• Examine your skin head-to-toe every month.
• See your physician every year for a professional skin exam.

Each year in the US there are more new cases of #SkinCancer than breast, prostate, lung & colon cancer - combined! In fact, 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer during their lifetime. The good news is that it's highly preventable. About 86% of #Melanoma and 90% of non-melanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to UV rays. That’s why embracing proper sun protection is critical. #MelanomaAwarenessMonth
