What we eat can significantly help alleviate the symptoms of perimenopause.
Here are 5 tips for what to eat during the perimenopause and menopause stages of your life, and what to expect on the Balance 3H+ Diet program at NY Health & Wellness:
1) Decrease carbs- excess or refined carbs can be detrimental to balancing hormones. Women should consider following a low glycemic style of eating with sources of protein and fat to slow the glucose response. This means sticking to carbs that are real whole food sources, not refined, and full of vitamins -- eating them mostly after exercise. Sweet potatoes, fruit, wild rice, squash, pumpkin, quinoa are all great sources of quality carbs. Our specialists at NYHW are all experts on fat loss and say that we should start with no more than 125g of carbs daily and then modify depending on what is working or not.
2) Increase potassium- this helps with water flushing to reduce cramping, bloating and keeping muscles lubricated. So think potatoes, bananas, acorn squash, avocado, dark leafy greens.
3) Increase healthy fats- this will regulate ovarian hormones by impacting prostaglandins, which is a hormone like substance that effects nearly every bodily function. This will keep muscles supple, help the digestive system, combat irritability, mood swings, headaches and anxiety. So best to eat salmon, shrimp, hemp seeds, grass fed beef, and flax seeds.
4) Check your vitamin levels
Do you have enough zinc, b6, calcium, magnesium, iron, and Vitamins C and D? Consult with our specialists to see if supplementation would be helpful.
5) Increase your quality protein
This helps to sustain hormone and brain chemistry. So, especially if you are active, you need to make sure you are getting a minimum of 1/2g per pound of body weight to 1g per pound of body weight.
