Use of Balance Tests to Identify Chronic Ankle Instability

• Exercise: Split Squat with VMO resist

• Position: Patient standing in a stationary lunge position, with hands on their hips to help maintain trunk posture.

• Proper movement of activity: Begin by performing the exercise in a descending motion, moving the knees (flexing) to a 90 degree angle. Make sure the resistive band in on the inner part of the to where it feels like the band is pulling the knee outward. The patient’s job is to keep the knee in neutral as they are performing the exercise.

• Things to avoid: Don’t not rotate your trunk backwards when performing your reps. Also avoid moving the front knee forward over the foot

• Benefits: Quad strengthening with a mild bias to adductors and VMO of front leg with the resistive band.
