The FDA gives a Christmas gift to millions of obese and overweight Americans as it just approved a novel and powerful weight loss drug Saxenda(liraglutide) on Dec 23rd, 2014.

During the FDA press conference announcing the good news, the FDA said "obesity is a public health concern and threatens the overall well-being of patients" - James Smith, M.D., M.S., acting deputy director of the Division of Metabolism and Endocrinology Products in FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

What is Saxenda?
Saxenda belongs to a new class of medications called incretins that act as agonists on Glucagon Like Peptide 1 pathway. Saxenda has the same active ingredient (liraglutide) as the popular diabetes medication Victoza albeit at a higher dose of 3 mg.

Why the hype?
Compared to the other weight loss medications, Saxenda is a bit more powerful in terms of efficacy and is relatively safe and well tested as it has been around for awhile as Victoza at lower dose.

How is it taken?
Saxenda is a subcutaneous injection once a day.

How effective is Saxenda for weight loss?
In studies, about 62% of those taking Saxenda lost at least 5% of their weight at one year.

“Saxenda, used responsibly in combination with a healthy lifestyle that includes a reduced-calorie diet and exercise, provides an additional treatment option for chronic weight management for people who are obese or are overweight and have at least one weight-related comorbid condition.

Impressive weight loss results

When used along with diet and exercise, Liraglutide, maintained weight loss achieved by caloric restriction and induced further weight loss over 56 weeks in a research study which also showed improvements in some cardiovascular disease-risk factors were also observed.

Saxenda(liraglutide), prescribed as 3.0 mg per day, holds promise for improving the maintenance of lost weight.

W8MD Medical Weight Loss Centers would be among the first weight loss centers to offer this valuable tool to eligible patients to assist them in their fight against obesity.

What is the status of primary care physicians in the United States and New York City?

According to a 2009 report by the New England Healthcare Institute, increased demand on primary care by older, sicker patients and decreased supply of primary care practitioners has led to a crisis in primary care delivery.

Primary health care results in better health outcomes, reduced health disparities and lower spending, including on avoidable emergency room visits and hospital care.

However, despite their importance to the health care system, the primary care position has suffered in terms of its prestige in part due to the differences in salary when compared to doctors that decide to specialize.

In a 2010 national study of physician wages conducted by the UC Davis Health System found that specialists are paid as much as 52 percent more than primary care physicians, even though primary care physicians see far more patients.

Primary care physicians earn $60.48 per hour; specialists on average earn $88.34. In 2011, about 17,000 doctors graduated from American medical schools and only 7 percent of graduates chose primary care!

The average age of a primary care physician in the United States is 47 years old, and one quarter of all primary care physicians are nearing retirement. Fifty years ago roughly half of the physicians in America practiced primary care; today, fewer than one third of them do. New York City in particular has a higher proportion of older physicians that may retire in the near future and if want a physician for longer, choosing a young physician makes sense!

How can W8MD help?
Although our focus is sleep disorders and weight loss, the New York office of W8MD Medical Weight Loss Centers of America does accept patients seeking primary care services on a limited basis! Since our focus is prevention rather than cure, we have one of the lowest hospital admission rates as we proactively prevent most problems! As weight disorders lead to over 50 medical problems, treating weight gain plays an important role in prevention!
