Great news! Turkey Creek is reopened to paddlers after a section of it was closed for almost a year after severe storms damaged the culverts supporting the old Eglin Railroad. I'll have more information and photos of the repairs this weekend after our scouting trip. Stay tuned!

The pictures alone made the trip worth it.

Found a bit of cuteness on my camping trip at St. Andrews State Park this weekend.

Me  in front of one of the few channel markers. This marker designates where the West Arm enters the main body of the Dead Lakes. At 6700 acres, I can imagine it doesn't take much to become lost.

Prior to yesterday's news (see +Beverly Hill post about honorary team member, Dakota), I took a trip over to the Dead Lakes in Wewahitchka to do some exploring and fishing. Although I managed to bring home a mess of crappie and shellcracker, I also was able to learn what makes the Dead Lakes so darn hard to navigate. Below is a picture of just one of the very hard to spot markers that let boaters/paddlers know that they're on the right track. I didn't spot this one until on the return trip, which luckily I handled with the assistance of a handheld gps. I plan to return, but I think it's going to be a few more trips before I can confidently navigate my way around the area.

Here's an interesting perspective of the restoration in progress at Timber Lake. The before photo (2011) is on the left.

Yes, it used to be a man-made lake created by an earthen damn across the creek. They (Eglin AFB Natural Resources) have since removed the damn allowing the creek to flow freely and nature to reclaim the area. I suspect that it will benefit the Okaloosa Darter, a small endangered fish that is only found in six clear-water streams on the Eglin Reservation. This will allow their range to expand.

The next time I go back I'll try to take a picture from the same spot in pic #1. When I was there yesterday I couldn't remember if I had any old pics at all.

I went hiking at Timber Lake on the Eglin reserve again this morning and managed to find the tree where I took a similar photo in 2011. The photo on the right is from 2011. The photo on the left is from today, 2015, showing how Eglin restored the pond to its former status as a free-flowing creek.

And this is the tunnel that the previous marker belongs to. If you're not looking in the right direction you'll miss it completely.
