I have an emergency beacon and don't feel that it detracts from adventuring. For me, personally, I don't intend to use it unless it's an actually emergency, such as if I break my leg on a remote hiking trail or I'm in a life threatening situation. I still don't hike or kayak beyond my abilities. I still let people know where I'm going and when I intend to be back. I have other survival skills that I can fall back on until I make my way out of the wilderness. PLBs are meant to be used responsibly. I'm thinking that those people that repeatedly "cry wolf" with them should be penalized.

Thanks to +Chris Townsend for posting this one earlier. Good food for thought.

That seems reasonable. I understand his concern but that really seems pretty fair...of course, I don't have any experience doing what you do so my opinion is worth everything you paid for it. ;-)

I went hiking at Timber Lake on the Eglin reserve again this morning and managed to find the tree where I took a similar photo in 2011. The photo on the right is from 2011. The photo on the left is from today, 2015, showing how Eglin restored the pond to its former status as a free-flowing creek.

Here's a before and after of the repairs on Turkey Creek. The culverts that once supported the old Eglin Railroad collapsed and the creek has been cleared and reopened to #kayaking

Great news! Turkey Creek is reopened to paddlers after a section of it was closed for almost a year after severe storms damaged the culverts supporting the old Eglin Railroad. I'll have more information and photos of the repairs this weekend after our scouting trip. Stay tuned!
