The National Veterans Art Museum (NVAM) Education Program needs your help!

There is less than a week left to donate to our Crowdrise Education fundraiser—and we have only reached half of our goal. Your donations help ensure Chicago-area youth from public, private and alternative schools enjoy engaging and consistent field trips at the NVAM. These field trips are conducted by veterans alongside professors and artists with Illinois Educator certifications.

Check the NVAM Education Crowdrise page to find out more about NVAM Education programming and outreach:

What’s the soundtrack to your life?

Who: Nathan Dillon of Everybody Rocks, NVAM staff, volunteers and you! This class is family-friendly and open to participants ages 6 - 106. This workshop is free and open to the public.

Nathan is a professional musician and teaching artist. He has taught rock band classes in such well-respected schools as Bank Street School in New York City  as well as Catherine Cook School and Nettelhorst in Chicago. He has performed professionally all over the world, playing music as diverse as Persian chamber music, bluegrass, classical, blues, and, of course, rock. He is Founder and Director of Everybody Rocks, a company dedicated to bringing music learning to people of all ages throughout Chicagoland. Learn more at www.EverybodyRocks.net.

What: A two-hour music-making workshop, where participants are immersed immediately in learning to play and concludes with a performance of the song learned in class. Potential songs (to be voted upon by participants) include:

“We Gotta Get Out of This Place” - Eric Burdon and the Animals
“Wild Thing” - The Troggs
“Born on the Bayou” - Creedence Clearwater Revival
“Fortunate Son” - Creedence Clearwater Revival
“Wipeout” - Surfaris
“The Letter” - The Box Tops
“Born to be Wild” - Steppenwolf

Why: The power of music to shape one’s mood and memories is undeniable. Great songs can pump you up, relax you, comfort you, and challenge you. Music has been an integral part of the military as well. From the bugle call of reveille to the radio transmissions in Vietnam to iPods and MP3 players in Iraq and Afghanistan, music is seldom far from our servicemen and women’s minds.

This workshop will provide each participant with familiarity with musical instruments, basic techniques, and skills training to perform a cover song as a group. Conversation will explore the function of music in shaping our moods and our role in shaping the music we hear.
A musical instrument and snacks will be provided. Space is limited. To ensure a spot, please RSVP by calling 312-326-0270 or email info@nvam.org.
