Cocoa farmers in Ivory Coast have only heard rumors about what their cocoa beans are used for. A journalist passes around a bar of chocolate, and they can't believe what they're eating.
This is a fascinating look at how disconnected we are from our food, and how globalization and industrial production has separated the experiences of people. Just as these farmers have never seen a chocolate bar before, most Americans -- who are very familiar with chocolate bars -- have never seen cocoa beans, cocoa trees and cocoa pods before, or understand how it's produced or fermented.
Huge public benefits and, according to this study at least, anything beyond 14 years has higher costs than benefits, merely rent seeking.
Netflix, Amazon, and Apple increasingly are fighting big publishers and studios, and I'd love to see them lobby much harder for a shorter copyright term.
