You just can't talk New Orleans Saints History without bringing up this guy.
Russell Erxlebean was a 1st round draft pick in 1979. The Texas kicker would go on to one of the worst ever 1st round picks in the history of the Saints if not the NFL.
Looking back, in my mind he was the physical persona of those early Saints teams before Jim Mora took over.
Always snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
Anyway, here's a little blurb on him.

In 1969 the Saints posted 5 wins which was actually the best ever for third-year expansion team at the time. Back in the day expansion teams didn't have the luxury of free agency that expansion teams have today. You were basically stuck with other teams' cast-offs.
A big part of that year's success was players like Andy Livingston (#48) and Jake Kupp (#50). That year both Livingston and Kupp, along with Doug Atkins, Tony Baker and Tom Demsey made the Pro Bowl.

But it was the combination of Kilmer to Abromowicz that made me a lifetime Saints fan. The crazy air attack in a game at that time that consisted of "3 yds. and a cloud of dust" to quote Lombardi was so exciting that I couldn't resist becoming a fan.

The Cajun Cannon: Bobby Hebert
From South Lafourche High in Galiano LA, Bobby Hebert played his college ball at NorthWestern Louisana. He joined the Saints in 1985 after being the All-Time top USFL quarterback in passing yards.
After playing 7 years with the Saints he is still #4 on the All-Time Passing Yards and Touchdown Passes for New Orleans.
Despite his accomplishments as a Saint though, he is remembered best for sitting out the 1990 season after demanding to be traded. He finally left New Orleans after the 1992 season and played the last 4 years of his career in Atlanta.

He actually attended Northwestern State University of Louisiana (and, Yes! If you are from there, the name is important).

Ever Heard of Danny Abramowicz.?
Danny was one of the original Saints, a rookie in 1967. He was the 420th player drafted in the 17th  round from Xavier. The story goes that he was actually cut during training camp but after storming into Tom Fears office and demanding another chance he was allowed to stay.
He went on to lead those early Saints in receiving 5 of the 6 six years he was in New Orleans as well as leading the NFL in catches in 1969.

4/20 falls on Sunday this year. Lots of progress around the country, lots to celebrate this year. There is nothing as powerful as an idea whose time has come, however long delayed.

Just uploaded this video to my site.
It's the preview of the 2000 season when Jim Haslett took over the mess that Mike Ditka left when he was fired.
By the end of that year the Saints would not only be NFC West Division Champions but beat the Rams for the first ever playoff victory in the team's history.

I'm sure people here remember Sammy Knight.
He was a major contributor to the Saint defenses of the late 90s and the early 2000 years.
Sammy Knight played a total of 12 seasons in the NFL. Six of those years where in New Orleans where he finished as the #3 Saints career Interception Leader.
