Happy September everyone!
This Seagate HDD came to our labs with obvious signs of corrosion on the screws of the PCB. We suspected liquid accident and we opened up the drive...
The particles on the surface are solidified particles of glucose (!)

In the process of recovering a 3TB WD Hard Disk Drive that has visited 3 other DR "companies" (!) before it reached our lab.
The drive was opened and we could see a lot of dust inside.
We cleaned the platters using special technique and replaced the damaged heads. Now the drive boots and we need to tweak the firmware to accept the new parts and then image the drive.

This 500 GB WD drive (Tornado 2R family) came to our lab marked as "Urgent". The diagnostics evaluation determined that the drive was suffering from bad heads and a Clean Room work was needed.

We used a 200 GB MEDIAMAX drive (actually it's WD rebranded) which parts were fully compatible (after some small tweaking we had to do).

The result, as shown in the last picture, was 99.9999 % successful recovery (with only 20 bad sectors as opposed to 728.5 million sectors that were successfully read).

Another successful recovery, another happy client.

In the recovery process of an oldie Maxtor 40GB drive (6K040L0) with one read/write head.
For this model, in case of mechanical failures (e.g. damaged head) it is easier and safer to transplant the platter to another chassis.

The drive was opened inside Northwind's Clean Room and the platter was swapped to the donor's chassis using special technique. The data was then read using donor's heads.

In the pictures part of the procedure is shown, alongside with the end result with healthy (green) sectors that are being read.

In this particular case, it was necessary to perform Smart Hotswap procedure as well, as there was severe damage to the Service Area of the drive.
