It is an unfortunate fact that in the U.S, about 2,400 children a year suffers severe shocks and burns after they place objects into the slots of electrical receptacles. The covers you can purchase for electrical outlets are no sure solution, as they can be pulled out by children and also can be a choking hazard because of their small size. The answer is tamper-resistant (TR) receptacles, which in 2011 were made mandatory in newly built homes under revisions to the National Electrical Code.
These receptacles have spring-loaded shutters that close off the contact openings or slots. When a plug is inserted into the receptacle, both springs are compressed and the shutters then open, allowing for the metal prongs to make contact and create an electrical circuit.
Because both springs must be compressed at the same time, the shutters do not open when a child attempts to insert an object into only one contact opening, so there is no contact with electricity. Tamper-resistant receptacles are simply an important measure in making your home a safe place for children!
Get in touch with Northern Electric Inc. today and have us install tamper-resistant receptacles in your home.
