From the article: "Civilization does not close its door to an orphaned toddler looking to start a new life in the United States, as Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey has proposed. Civilization does not apply a religious test to victims of religious fanaticism, as Senator Ted Cruz, Republican of Texas, wants to do. Only those who pray to Jesus, in his plan, would be allowed to resettle the United States."

It has been a year since Davyd died. I continue to write about it as I try to come to terms with it; to find meaning in it.

Needless to say, it has been an incredibly difficult period for me. But I have been loved and supported by so many of you, as indeed he was. And I thank you for it.

Antonioni inspired me for my upcoming episodes of #PLL 602 and 603 and writer Joseph Dougherty indulged me.  The sharp viewer will pick up on the references.
“Antonioni’s way of looking in L’Avventura is marked by a certain externality. The characters’ feelings are not directly expressed, whether in the dialogue or through efforts of performance. An idea...

Walt Whitman: "We had best look our times and lands searchingly in the face, like a physician diagnosing some deep disease. Never was there, perhaps, more hollowness at heart than at present, and here in the United States. Genuine belief seems to have left us. The underlying principles of the States are not honestly believ’d in, (for all this hectic glow, and these melodramatic screamings,) nor is humanity itself believ’d in....Our New World democracy, however great a success in uplifting the masses out of their sloughs, in materialistic development, products, and in a certain highly-deceptive superficial popular intellectuality, is, so far, an almost complete failure in its social aspects, and in really grand religious, moral, literary, and esthetic results… In vain have we annex’d Texas, California, Alaska, and reach north for Canada and south for Cuba. It is as if we were somehow being endow’d with a vast and more and more thoroughly-appointed body, and then left with little or no soul."
“America, if eligible at all to downfall and ruin, is eligible within herself, not without… Always inform yourself; always do the best you can; always vote.”

I have written about my grief over the last few months as a way of processing it. Several people have asked me to compile my writings into a book. Perhaps someday I will, but in the meantime, here are the significant posts, as well as a link to Davyd’s memorial service from last October. It is my hope that these posts might help others, who are dealing with their own losses, as we all must.

Honoring Davyd Whaley in Big Sur...
In December of 2013, Davyd Whaley and I drove up to Big Sur on our way to San Francisco. It’s a sparsely populated region of the central coast of California, where the Santa Lucia Mountains rise abruptly from the Pacific Ocean. We left early in the morning and made it to Nepenthe by lunch, where we sat and watched the birds as we ate. Afterwards we...
