"Circumstances not only alter causes; they alter character." — Kelly Miller

Our life circumstances shape our character much like wind and stone. Making some areas smooth and leaving others rough and jagged. Every person is and has their own personal mountain to climb.

“It is crucial for the future of the Black liberation struggle that we remain ever mindful that ours is a shared struggle, that we are each other’s fate.” — bell hooks

True Black liberation can never be achieved without securing equality for every man, woman, and child in the community. Freedom for some and continued oppression for others isn’t overcoming. It’s a job half done. The pursuit of equality and liberation should be a shared responsibility within the community with everyone playing their part.

"It was inspirational that despite many setbacks, the people in Anne Moody’s life continued to aspire for and work towards greater things. Some of the disappointments are sad but I still chuckled a bit as they were humorous in a dark way.

NEW PODCAST EPISODE: Coming of Age in Mississippi [Book Review]

The more I read about the global Black experience, the more I realize how little I know. Anne Moody’s recounting of her socio-political awakening offered me a new perspective on the Civil Rights Movement.

NEW VIDEO: Coming of Age in Mississippi [Book Review]

Having grown up in the city, I enjoyed reading about Anne Moody’s experiences growing up in a small rural town. Her gossipy writing style when it came to small-town happenings was very enjoyable. Prepare to be grossed out and giggle a bit about the stories of Miss Ola and the old milk lady.

“Students are not sent to school to learn to obey. They are sent there to learn to do, to think, to execute, to be men and women.” — W.E.B. DuBois

Inspire a thirst for knowledge in children by encouraging their curiosity and motivating them to think for themselves. This will enable them learn about the world as it is while also imagining it as it could be.

NEW BLOG POST: Coming of Age in Mississippi [Book Review]

It was refreshing to read about the development of an activist juxtaposed against a young woman’s journey to define herself. Anne Moody’s introduction to and involvement in the Civil Rights Movement unfolds like a beautifully written story. But, there is also something sweet about her scandalous talent show performance, teen crushes, and first kisses.

“Politically, black power means what it has always meant to SNCC: the coming-together of black people to elect representatives and to force those representatives to speak to their needs. It does not mean merely putting black faces into office.” — Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Toure)

Black power isn’t just about Black faces as representatives.

That’s just a part of it.

Black power is about the Black community selecting it’s own representatives. And those representatives understanding and promoting the needs, hopes, and ideals of the Black community.
