SOUTH AFRICA’S BEST BUDGET BUYS

Are you in the market for a car, but feel like your budget is cramping your style? Well, you have two options; start looking at the used car market, or take a look at these brand-new models that won’t break the bank.
If you’re looking to come in under the psychological barrier of R100 000, then you’ll be looking at the Chery QQ3 0.8 TE retailing from R93 995. Note that no airbags or Anti-locking Braking System (ABS) is fitted to this model, so if you're concerned about safety, it would be best to look at other models.
Both the Datsun Go Mid (from R104 900) and Go 1.2 Lux are brilliant options if you’re willing to go just over the R100 000 mark. They are backed by a trusted, extensive servicing network (Nissan) and come with a 3-years/100 000 km warranty for peace of mind. Low fuel consumption, air conditioning, multi-information display and electric windows are all useful added features that make the Datsun Go worth considering. You can also connect your smartphone to two speakers using the Aux/USB port. Datsun Go is one of the most popular small cars on the market with impressive sales numbers and specifications.
If you set your limit at R120 00 then it’s worth looking at the FAW V2 – 1.3 DLX – (From R114 995) with its 1.3-litre engine. It is a powerful car with a 5-speed manual transmission and fairly low fuel consumption. It has ABS brakes, LED brake lights and dual airbags.
The Tata Indica 1.4 LGi – (From R116 995) is also a good choice and a familiar sight on South African roads. It includes power steering and air conditioning, but it doesn’t have such an impressive fuel consumption rate at 7.4 L/100km.
Available from R118 300 is the Chevrolet Spark. All derivatives of the Spark feature at least two airbags, ABS and Electric Brake Force Distribution (EBD) as a standard for peace of mind.
Shopping for an affordable new ride for under R150 000? There are quite a few options in this segment.
Launched in January 2015, the Suzuki Celerio 1.0 GA – (From R126 300) remains popular and claims an unbeatable fuel consumption figure of 4.7 L/100km. The Celerio comes with basic safety features, the trusted Suzuki name and its dashing good looks!
The Ford Figo also remains popular as an entry level budget vehicle. It features ABS, EBD, dual front airbags, immobiliser and central locking. Thanks to Bluetooth you can easily switch between your phone and radio for added convenience.
The spacious Hyundai Grand i10 (from R139 900) comes with an impressively long list of features like keyless entry, heated and foldable mirrors, Bluetooth, Air conditioning ABS, EBD and dual airbags. That’s quite a mouthful for a little car!
The trusted Volkswagen name makes the Polo Vivo worth considering in this segment, coming in at R142 700. The entry level model is a 1.4-litre engine with a manual five speed transmission.
At the end of the day, you need to weigh up comfort, safety features, fuel consumption and of course price, before making up your mind. So do some research, ask friends for advice and go for test drives. It’s a big purchase, and you want to be sure you make an informed decision.
