On December 31, 1999, as the world sat on edge anticipating a range of computer issues related to the new millennium, the mood in St. Louis and Mandan was more celebratory than worried.

For the soon-to-be-merged companies of NISC, the moment known globally as Y2K was a high-profile exercise of their adaptability. Over a year of planning, programming and testing resulted in Y2K having little impact on CADP and NCDC systems. Just as NISC does today, they constantly upgraded software to respond to regulatory and operational changes in the telecom and electric utility industries.

When midnight passed uneventfully, employees toasted the New Year in St. Louis and Mandan. They gathered in conference rooms with cold cuts and soda ready to answer calls from Members with problems — but the phones never rang.

With the progression of technology, having a presence online and on social media has become increasingly important.

Our originating organizations, CADP and NCDC, both introduced their first websites in 1996. In 2005, NISC adopted the web address “nisc.coop” to reflect our cooperative roots. As our solution offerings continue to grow and evolve, so too does our website which features videos, product information and news, and focuses not only on user experience, but user #engagement.

Originally serving as a recruitment tool in 2008, our presence on social media has also grown drastically over the years, providing a great avenue for us to connect and engage with Members and share news from around NISC offices and within the industries we serve.

In the fall of 1998, Vern Dosch, General Manager of North Central Data Cooperative (NCDC) at the time, was seated next to Gary Hobson, General Manager of Central Area Data Processing (CADP), at a regional conference centered on co-ops working together for the common good.

The pair hardly knew each other, aside from that they were competitors. However, they soon realized they had the same goal in mind: to do what was best for the Members.

Knowing that both NCDC and CADP were due for a rewrite, it was clear that the best decision for both organizations was to become one. On July 1, 2000, NCDC and CADP merged to officially become NISC, with Gary serving as CEO until his retirement in 2002 and Vern leading the cooperative ever since.

It’s incredible to see how far #technology (and fashion) has come in the past 50 years. On this #ThrowbackThursday, we’re remembering how programmers relied on computer operators for entering some program commands and sometimes for making changes on the fly. Programmers “coded” manually, eventually turning code over to a keypunch operator or entering it on a terminal they shared with other programmers. Today’s developers need no middlemen and through laptops and remote connect capabilities, they code whenever and wherever necessary!

Be sure to visit our 50th anniversary website at www.nisc50.coop and check back next Thursday for another #NISCMomentInHistory! #NISC50 #TBT

Now more than ever, having reliable power and electricity is essential to performing our daily tasks. When we lose power, it can sometimes feel like our lives have stopped. That’s when electric utilities shine, restoring power and keeping their members informed with the latest updates and sometimes even minute-by-minute restoration times.

We are so excited to see so many of our Members and Partners on this year’s highest ranked J.D. Power Electric Utility Residential Customer Satisfaction Study. Thank you for always going the extra mile to keep your members informed and for embodying the true spirit of our #CooperativePrinciples.

A special congratulations to Sawnee EMC for topping the list! #JDPower #CustomerSatisfactionStudy

When it comes to protecting your organization’s data, it’s crucial for employees to be your first line of defense. Check out this recent article from the American Public Power Association (APPA) on how NISC has helped Decatur Utilities arm their employees with the tools and knowledge they need to identify and prevent #cyberattacks.
