How many people saw those bags and said nothing and knew they should have said something? Wake up people, no alarm is worse than a false alarm!
The goal is to get them interested in the broad selection available outside of the popular classics. Also to not scare them off with a long winded description.
You get to control spaces on the board through acquisition. You get the option to upgrade those spaces through houses and hotels. You have lots of opportunities to interact and negotiate with the other players and there are opportunities for amazing moments due to luck (e.g. The only roll that gets me safely through your real estate is a 10... BOOM, I rolled a 10!).
I say all this not to suggest we should be playing Monopoly, but rather to point out that someone who likes Monopoly and has never played anything else... especially someone who has played Monopoly electronically and developed some sort of strategy... is right in the wheelhouse for loving modern gateway games. They like making decisions. They like building a tableau of sorts. They like upgrading their stuff. They like player interaction and they like the opportunity for "big, exciting turns."
So the pitch maybe should not include phrases like "WAYY better than Monopoly" or "So much more interesting that Monopoly" in favor of something like:
"If you like Monopoly, there are tons of games available now that offer new and interesting mechanics and themes you'll like."
"If you imagine some of the feeling you get playing Monopoly, but transported into a fantasy, sci-fi or historical military world, you can start to get the idea."
I like the movie analogy above too... you can say something like "Monopoly is really a pretty great game... but over the past 50 years, board game design has come a long way. There are lots of titles that remove or smooth out the warts Monopoly has while ramping up the good stuff... and also innovating new and interesting things along the way."
In short, use Monopoly as a positive comparison and not a negative one... I think you'll get better results.
