Our first, the very best and only dog - the amazingly beautiful and always glad, pitch black Labrador Retriever , is not with us any longer. After more than eleven great years together we had to make that final call, the one that's so hard.
The last days we had together with Neo were sad but also really good - he had some of his better days - and we were outdoors a lot, Neo doing all those things he liked to do. Quite a few car rides, too - he loved that and was always eager to jump in.
Neo went to sleep the last time on July 31, resting in my wife's lap completely relaxed. Soon he was snoring a bit and we actually smiled. After some ten minutes, he then died very peacefully while we were holding him close.
I'd guess most of us who are not young any longer have experienced situations with deep sorrow connected to human relations. Somehow I guess I thought - or hoped - that losing Neo wouldn't be so bad. Boy, was I wrong.
