Dear Americans,

Why are you letting morons ruin your perfectly good country? You have but precious few moments left to stop this before the rest of the world (which most of you probably think of as "just a theory" already) start thinking of you as the religious fundamentalist porn producers of the world, and nothing else. Please get your idiots under control.

Pyrrhic victory in South Carolina

So, the Wooly Mammoth has been formally named the state fossil.
But there's a clause in the legislation that makes me wince.
According to the legislation, the Mammoth was "created on the Sixth Day with the other beasts of the field."

What.
The.
Fuck.

#science
On March 30 I wrote a bit about the kerfuffle in the South Carolina legislature, which was squabbling over whether to make the Wooly Mammoth (called the "Columbian Mammoth") the state fossil.  This...

Kinda makes me wish I had been religious...

In this video the experience that is generally described as "loosing faith" is instead described as "gaining understanding". I have never been religious, so I have never had the experience of realizing that my world view could be based on rational thought instead of supernatural nonsense, and the way he describes it, that experience sounds amazing.

I'm not big on platitudes...

But this actually sums up my attitude to the fact that life is finite pretty well...

"If the only thing keeping a person decent, is the expectation of divine reward, then, brother, that person is a piece of shit." - Detective Rustin Cohle, True Detective

One of many brilliant quotes from Rust in the excellent mini series True Detective. If you haven't already: Watch it!

Thrusday morning poetry

A beautiful poem on the most important subject in the world read by Michael Caine. Could anything be better?

Introduction
And now for the introduction:

I have a fairly wide array of interests, but for the moment my time is divided between Science, Climbing, Maths, Surfing, Beauty and Tech so these are the areas you can expect to find me engaged in here.

I have a tendency to get a little hot headed when it comes to religion and other topics that stem from or breed injustice, but I am trying to put myself on a "pointless debate diet". I will instead try to focus on positives, and am working on instituting some sort of Four Positive Posts for Every One Negative policy. But we will have to see about that.
Bragging rights
I exist in a constant state of wonder about the magnificence of the world and am totally fine with having essentially no idea what is going on.
