Cloud scale, with a 32-bit table index. I, too, like to live dangerously... That said, I do remember Slashdot having severe trouble because their comment index was.... 24 bits.

In distributed systems, you often need even longer indices: you'll often use hash-based indices (to prevent having a single number sequencer that would then be the bottleneck), and there the birthday problem comes and visits (generally requiring twice the number of bits you would otherwise need).
"Any student progress from 9:19 to 10:33 a.m. on Friday was not saved..." explained the embarrassed CTO of the educational non-profit Code.org, "and unfortunately cannot be recovered." Slashdot reader theodp writes: Code.org CTO Jeremy Stone gave the kids an impromptu lesson on the powers of two wi...

Which is why you go out and buy a U2F-capable Second-Factor Authentication (2FA) device right now; it makes your username and password useless to an attacker.

Good options are the Yubikey devices.

Security and UI design don't get along all that well.
When building applications that display untrusted content, security designers have a major problem— if an attacker has full control of a block of pixels, he can make those pixels look like anything…

Yesterday at home; SpaceX launch. Hosted webcast on the TV, technical on the laptop. Yes, I'm a proud nerd, and I watched it with my daughter and wife! :-D Nice detail: the hosted webcast showed velocities in km/h, whereas the technical webcast used proper m/s.

Wait, what?! Do I need to order an extra bucket of bits for my switch? Who'd have thunk it?... ;)

"Hello Bergboer

Consumables always run out when you need them most. Ordering in time means you'll have certainty.

You ordered the following product about 6 months ago:
[...]"

Yes, that product is an ethernet switch :-D

It's to refresh the packets lost due to collisions. It was far more important with Hubs of course.

Mobile connections nowadays... When I was a boy, those were bytes per second, but without the Mega prefix. Wired, that is.

This is what all those spectacular SpaceX landing are really about; the first stage you see landing in this photo will be relaunched in late February, when it will push a new second stage and another satellite out of the atmosphere and to ~2 km/s. This is where the cost savings will come from, and this is what is revolutionary about SpaceX.
A Falcon 9 rocket's first stage booster descends to a propulsive landing on a platform in the Atlantic Ocean on April 8, 2016. The same booster is assigned to fly again next month with the SES 10 communications satellite. Credit: SpaceX. A European-built communications satellite has arrived at Cape ...

Public Service Announcement: SpaceX launch coverage starts in about an hour and fifteen minutes. This is SpaceX' first launch since their launchpad explosion a couple of months ago. Happy nerding! :-D

Taking a train to Canada was never this easy.
Bad Map Projection: Liquid Resize. (alt-text). This map preserves the shapes of Tissot's indicatrices pretty well, as long as you draw them in before running the resize. |< · < ? > >|. Winter has definitely arrived in central Europe; this is at an elevation of just 600m, at -7 °C.

Nice location on the river side, right in the historic centre of Eijsden. Good food at reasonable prices. Note that parking is tightly controlled in the historic centre, but you can park for free near the church.

The facility is on the Western side of the highway, but accessible both from the Northbound and the Southbound directions. It has a fuel station, toilets, as well as a coffee bar, a shop, and a self-service restaurant. There are also outside picknick tables. Outside of winter time, you'll see a lot of storks outside!

Nice somewhat up-market food. Good place to have lunch after visiting the "December 44" (battle of the bulge) museum just around the corner.
