The matte paintings of the original Star Wars trilogy and their creators
Oh so pretty and talented ...

#starwars   #mattepainting
Before the computing era, ILM was the master of oil matte painting, making audiences believe that some of the sets in the original Star Wars and Indiana Jones trilogy were real when they weren't. They were the work of genius artists like Chris Evans, Mike Pangrazio, and the legend, Ralph McQuarrie himself.

Dash Cam Confessionals - The cop got some moves !
Going for a "shake it off routine" in his car, this is going to make you smile. Then watch it for a second time for the parts where he is "serious" and stops doing the fun things. Got me wondering - how often do we hide what we enjoy because what others might think of us?

A bit concerned about the hands free driving but fun nonetheless. ;)

Without his ex wife and the rest of the team he had it wouldn't have been the movie it was. Remember Flash Gordon? Nah neither does anyone else. Its pretty obvious she saved SW with her editing, look at the clips of the original cuts to see how atrocious it was. I give him props for putting together a bunch of cool genres and making it work together, but his genius started and stopped right there. I mean LOOK how bad the prequels where?! Horrible horrible dialogue, he turned fine actors into boring monologue blabbing mannequins and destroyed the creative input of this team bcus otherwise you will get FIRED for speaking out against him. Futures of text - A survey of all the current innovation in text as a medium
Some fascinating ideas on how to improve text(s) for interaction
of human with computers / services
"Text is the most socially useful communication technology. It works well in 1:1, 1:N, and M:N modes. It can be indexed and searched efficiently, even by hand. It can be translated. It can be produced and consumed at variable speeds. It is asynchronous. It can be compared, diffed, clustered, corrected, summarized and filtered algorithmically. It permits branching conversations, lurking, annotation, quoting, reviewing, summarizing, structured responses, exegesis, even fan fic. The breadth, scale and depth of ways people use text is unmatched by anything."

Yes, math can be pretty, esp. in 3D!
_These are 3-D printed sculptures designed to animate when spun under a strobe light. The placement of the appendages is determined by the same method nature uses in pinecones and sunflowers. The rotation speed is synchronized to the strobe so that one flash occurs every time the sculpture turns 137.5º—the golden angle. If you count the number of spirals on any of these sculptures you will find that they are always Fibonacci numbers.
For this video, rather than using a strobe, the camera was set to a very short shutter speed (1/4000 sec) in order to freeze the spinning sculpture. John Edmark is an inventor/designer/artist. He teaches design at Stanford University._

Google Launchpad Berlin - fall in love with the city, then change the world
I love the way the video portraits the city. When friends ask me why I wanted to move here for such a long time, this will make a great reference.  It may look superficial to mention this point instead of the Launchpad, but the feel of the city has so much impact that it is worth noting. I know no other city in Germany (or in non english speaking countries in Europe) where "international thinking" is so ingrained, so much part of living here. Of course you can find places where it is different, but if you come to this part, you will be embedded in a international surrounding / thinking / living.

Not so much in a celebrity way of "oh look who is visiting" but more in the sense of starting up - the most common question here is 'so when did you come to Berlin' and 'what is your story'. It's the default.

Looking back at the Launchpad, it was people from many different places, and that never was a relevant question. Nor "how old are you", "what have you done before to make you think you can have an idea like that?". Having a great location with tons of sunshine and rooftops of course helped tremendously.  So I am looking forward to Munich - if only to compare Berlin to it. ;) ;)

ps: what's the soundtrack called? :)

Social Media Tactician. Loves systems and workflows. European.
European Social Media Tactician. Founder Girl Geek Dinner Germany, Author of the German Twitter Book "Twitter - Mit 140 Zeichen zum Web 2.0" and
"Facebook, Twitter & Co - Erfolgreiches Social Media Marketing"

I consult on implementing and running social media professionally. Strategy is fine, but at some point you need to get on the ground running and answer questions like "And how do I do this now?" "where do I start?" "what do I need?". Think systems, workflows, procedures. With me you get somebody who is able to take your chaos and turn it into something workable.

Having worked in the enterprise for 15 years in global IT and controlling plus equal amount of time working with SMB and startups on why they belong on the internet and now social media, I am well versed in old school as much as 'the new stuff' but also the thinking and problems of big corporations as much as single entrepreneurs.

While I work from Germany, I do travel and like to boost my frequent flyer account. :)

I am based in Berlin, Germany.
