While I'm here singing Gen Con's praises, it strikes me as a good time to remind everyone that now is the time to apply to be a Featured Presenter for the Industry Insider program at this year's convention. I believe you have to be logged in to start your submission.

What is Required of an Industry Insider Featured Presenter?

Gen Con Industry Insider Featured Presenters must attend Gen Con 2015 and are asked to ...

* Participate in 3-5 seminars/panels over the course of the four days; flexibility is key.
* Submit topics you are interested in and would like to host at the show. We encourage you to host interactive events such as workshops. The topics you submit will be incorporated into the events being offered under the Industry Insider program. Topics should be broad enough for other featured presenters to participate with you. Only fellow, current Industry Insider Featured Presenters are permitted to participate in panels as part of the event offerings in the Industry Insider program. You can submit events separately outside of the Industry Insider program should you want to discuss topics with friends/colleagues that are not featured presenters.
At the end of the submission process, you will be required to agree to Terms & Conditions which outlines your involvement, this will serve as a contract moving forward.

What do Industry Insider Featured Presenters Get In Return?

Gen Con offers the following ...

* A complimentary "Industry Insider" badge (good for all fours days of the show)
* Highlighted on our website and in a dedicated section of the program book with your picture and bio
* A hotel code that allows access to an exclusive block of “self-pay” rooms just for Industry Insider Featured Presenters (you are responsible for acquiring your room and covering the costs)
* Access to the VIG Lounge located in the Convention Center. The VIG Lounge offers a comfy lounge setting and seating areas, free Wi-Fi, and complementary drinks among other things.
* Early access to the Exhibit Hall on Thursday morning

Key Industry Insider Dates/Deadlines for 2015

Request for Consideration Open March 12 – April 2
Advisory Panel: Presenter & Topic Review/Selection April 2 - 23
Featured Presenter Notification On/Around April 17
Picture Deadline April 30
Featured Presenters: Topic Review May 1 – May 8
Event Registration Opens May 17
* Dates are subject to shift/change as time is needed

How the Process Works ...

Interested individuals introduce themselves using the online form. (Please note that submitting does not mean you are automatically accepted into the program.)
The Industry Insider Advisory Panel reviews the forms and makes selections (based on individual and topics)
Individuals are notified either way regarding their status
The Advisory Panel selects the topics, based on submissions, which makes up the event programming for Industry Insider program. The panel also recommends panelists (from the current Industry Featured Presenter list) who will take part in the discussions.
Featured Presenters will have an opportunity to review the topics and fellow panelists they have been selected for

Bleeding Cool picked up the Blue Rose announcement.
By Christopher Helton Tabletop roleplaying and hobby game publisher Green Ronin Publishing announced a new edition of their Blue Rose game. Blue Rose is a game that steps outside of the traditional Tolkien-esque high fantasy, or Howard-inspired Swords & Sorcery for a style of fantasy written by female authors such as Mercedes Lackey or Diane Duane instead. Good for Gen Con for standing on the right side of this issue. I've not missed attending the convention in 26 consecutive years and it is a key event for my business. I hope the governor does the right thing and vetoes.

I have a propostion:  What if we called Gen Con's customer base to action?
What if we send the Governor Pence a Magic Card, say a Circle of Protection Artifact to his office in Indiana?  Its in stock at most online vendors at 25¢ and the vendor can easily send it the Governor's office for their customer.
Here is the address:  Michael R. Pence
Office of the Governor is located at 200 W. Washington St., Rm. 206, Indianapolis, IN  46204

As a game creator myself, not to mention being a pretty vanilla white chick, I will readily admit that it can be hard to do diversity “right” when dealing in fantasy worlds that include fantasy races like elves and dwarves and created-from-whole-cloth races (like Dragon Age’s qunari) in addition to the range of human races and skin tones. BioWare’s execution in this is certainly not one of perfection but it IS one that clearly shows they’re paying attention and they’re trying. Their gender representation has been great. They’ve created a world with gay, bi, and trans characters who exist not just on the fringe of the setting but are key participants in the heroic tale, a world where crossing the boundaries of race, gender, sexual identity, nationality, and cultural bias (Templars vs. mages, Chantry vs. Imperial Chantry, etc.) is an expected part of the experience and clearly something implemented with much thought and attention. Each release has improved the expression and implementation of those values, Bioware has repeatedly shown that they’re listening and adapting (which is why there is a “strong black woman” to complain about in DA:I to go alongside the undeniably heroic Ser Barris who resolutely does not fall into the Angry Black Man, Scary Black Man, or Magical Negro tropes).

Tanya D’s observations about the representation of real-world race in Dragon Age are correct. Based on Bioware taking such critiques to heart in the past, I have confidence they will continue to improve their offerings to allow players like Tanya to be able to “see themselves” in the world, just as they’ve done to this point in their portrayals so far, such as all the powerful women (in the military orders, in the clergy, among the mages, as queens, ambassadors, and empresses) that already populate Thedas as dwarves, elves, humans, and qunari.
The mythical realms of Dragon Age grow beautifully with the telling, including their representation of Earthly minorities. Even so, something's missing...

I was pleased (and a little flattered) that not only was GenCon leadership open to change with the program but that they accepted so many of my personal recommendations and terminology. They essentially made formal the language that I'd already been using to describe the program.

Definitely apply, Michelle!
