This is an almost-true story about a young passionate developer. It was the late 2004 and he had just started working in a small company offering everything he desired: a good salary, working with his preferred programming language, approaching complexities, and modeling architectures. This was not the first working experience of the young developer. But his very first project had proven to be problematic. At the time he believed features would...

Two weeks ago I started playing with map generation algorithms. I wanted to come up with a map generator (and eventually a climatic environment simulator) using javascript coffeescript because it’s really easy to prototype something and my objective was to learn to do something, not to really do something (so, when talking of “map generation” there is really no need to add obstacles to the quest like OpenGL, strictly typed languages, and so on...

I tried Go and I liked it Say hello to Gopher. Gopher is the mascotte of a new language from Google, called Go, with the capital G. Not a very clever name from a search engine company, if you ask me, but that’s probably the only bad thing you will hear about it. Hint: use the word golang to search on Google A brief introduction Created inside Google by Ken Thompson and Rob Pike, fathers of Unix and UTF-8, to overcome the limi...

Recently we spent a bit of time trying to setup a better, faster and nerder alternative for our developer’s blog. If we could have hosted our blog on github it would be really nerd like. Ruhoh seems to be a better alternative over Jekyll, so we tried to setup a static blog using it, but it requires to replicate the post author info on each post, and this is not DRY! We ended up writing a small plugin for this called: Ruhoh Multiple Authors

Emacs... the missing OS!
Follow this tutorial (http://efstathiou.gr/unlinked/fullscreen) to install it with Lion fullscreen support.
Use +Giovanni Intini's emacs.d repo (https://github.com/intinig/emacs.d) or my fork (https://github.com/nicolaracco/emacs_d) as your configuration, and you'll get the best emacs distro you would ever try :)

Do you ever wondered how to scale a div within a fluid layout, keeping its aspect ratio? The solution is pretty easy, and - amazingly - you don’t need Javascript!  Just nest your element in a fluid container - this will be our ratio-killer - and give it these rules: .container { position: relative display: inline-block width: 50% } These properties will let our container div to scale accordingly to the window width. Then, we’l...

One month ago Heroku announced websocket support. If you need a pub/sub solution, Pusher remains an unbeatable alternative: its free plan is good for small apps, and you can setup it in seconds. But if you need a classic client-server solution (i.e. to talk to each client separately) there were no chances to develop it on Heroku. Now it should be easy enough to achieve this. You can find the official guide for ruby here. And if you ar...

Did you know #try has been changed since Rails 4 ? I didn’t. Look at the implementation for Rails 4 and Rails 3. Rails 4 implementation uses “respond_to?” to check the method presence before calling it via send. It’s a subtle change, but it’s enough to become a problem: In Rails 3 you could use try even when you are dealing with method_missing. Now you have to override the “respond_to?” to make it work. E.g.: class A def method_mis...

Opal: give it a try
on Mikamai developer's blog
If you are a Ruby developer, you’re probably constantly complaining about Javascript’s quirks :-) Yes, Coffeescript is a great abstraction. It gives you a nice syntax that is both easier to read and easier to write. Stuff like the fat arrow and the class keyword are undoubtfully better than their vanilla JavaScript counterparts. In addition Coffeescript compiles to plain Javascript without the need of any framework or third party library. In a...
