The Phoenix talussnail is endemic to the Phoenix, Arizona, region and occurs on steep talus slopes in the city and surrounding ranges. While surface temperatures may exceed 70 C (150 F) and be bone dry, below the surface rock just below the soil the temperature remains 85-90 F with a trace of moisture throughout the hottest, dryest months of the year. During monsoon season the heat from the rock is carried into the soil by the rain and can be surprisingly hot. Quite an extreme, and surprising environment to find snails, wouldn't you say?
