Great post. I agree with John's assessment - I think the ability to target ads based on very specific demographics & interests (like you can on Facebook) is another big motivator behind the "rip off the band aid" approach we've seen recently...but ultimately Google needs better connections with their users and to encourage users to stay logged in more.
