Over a period of 30-plus years during which they lugged nitrogen tanks to remote regions of Central and South America to keep their tissue samples cold, ornithologists collected DNA and used it to reconstruct the most comprehensive family tree of hummingbirds ever. They found that the birds' biodiversity has been booming and that their number of species could still be set to double over the next few million years.

The successful group could still double in number of species before levelling off.

I'd love to know when this photo was taken, but irruptions often occur after summers with a bloom in the lemming population. This is a very real, of not a little dark, expression of this. Cool!

70 dead lemmings lining a snowy owl nest! The lemming shapes every aspect of its #ecosystem, and may be behind the recent snowy owl invasion. Learn more about this amazing rodent: http://bit.ly/1bPNxG9

Analyzing a Trade-Off, Swiftly
Now that we've completely our obsession with Picidae, why don't we switch over to, of all things, swifts (family: Apodidae)? Shall we? The incredible migration of the Bar-tailed Godwit. Image credit: USGS Alaska Science Center If you're a researcher looking...

"The never endings in the inner ear of a bird are so widely spaced that its brain may accurately separate sounds units on the time scale of 10 times more accurately as can man" - L. Irby Davis

#Birdfacts...and a bit of the relativity of sound perception. Man may hear one sound at a certain speed, while birds may hear that same sound more slowly in the same amount of time.

Don't Get Too Excited, but Syrian Woodpeckers Like Pollution
Learn about this photo at its source here . The myriad ways that we affect our environment are pretty dumbfounding, aren't they? Just by releasing chemicals like CO2 and Methane into the atmosphere, we increase the acidity of the ocean, create a runaway gre...

Introduction
I'm an aspiring ornithologist, avid birder, adventurer, outdoorsman, naturalist, and anything in between. Having felt a passion for ornithology since the age of 3, I spend a huge amount of time exploring planet earth in an attempt to never stop learning...because there's so much to be found! This being my central goal, I share my thoughts and discoveries on Twitter @nmbirder14, and on my blog: http://scienceofbirds.blogspot.com. Now get out there!
