Introduction
I'm a software developer working at a regional power utility on the energy markets side.  I have some military background as well, having served in the United States Marine Corps and currently in the United States Army Reserves, and I pride myself on recognizing and exemplifying good leadership.

I'm recently focused on my polyglot language knowledge, working in Clojure, JRuby, Java, and RESTful web services.

Don't know what to do? Start with a bad idea
"I use a trick with co-workers when we’re trying to decide where to eat for lunch and no one has any ideas. I recommend McDonald’s.

An interesting thing happens. Everyone unanimously agrees that we can’t possibly go to McDonald’s, and better lunch suggestions emerge. Magic!

It’s as if we’ve broken the ice with the worst possible idea, and now that the discussion has started, people suddenly get very creative. I call it the McDonald’s Theory: People are inspired to come up with good ideas to ward off bad ones."

How do you tell someone that their idea is nothing if you can't execute on it?  I don't think a patent application should be your priority when you're still looking for someone to 'make your prototype' happen...

This is the kind of stuff that Big Data is going to become just another part of the fabric of ALL IT systems if it's not already.

This is actually pretty interesting.  I'm curious to see how well it'll do.

Listen to this with a good set of earbuds.  It's incredibly immersive.

Shameless promotion, but 10GB is better than 5GB and with a referral link to get it for you, it's not a bad deal.

That's a pretty damning video on how little most of America matters to the parties vying for the presidency.

"They don't trust politicians, the press, or pundits, but they treat the ideas of all of those players seriously enough to formulate an opinion of their own. If only the politicians trying to get their vote behaved the same way."

...Or if their respective parties were allowed to.  I honestly think that the electoral college has pretty much decimated any third party options, and the way our government is set up, there is almost no room for any other party to gain a foothold, and little support for anything other than establishment candidates.  And, since establishments are currently vyying to be polar opposites in every possible wedge issue, you have to play to which issues you're more okay with than the other party, even if you--like probably everybody else in the states--has alot of gray area beliefs that don't fit you neatly into Blue or Red.

All in all, though, I liked this article.  It was a little more honest than I'm used to reading, and certainly dispenses with the silly games going on between both parties in trying to label each other as the reincarnation of the devil in blue or red.

Holy crap that's cool.  So when you look at the horizon, your brain is picking up all sorts of signals.  Some of them are so minor that you subconsciously filter them out.  Well, what if those ones that you filtered out were instead tracked and correlated with a computer outside your body to determine if it's a real threat?

That's cool.
