For almost two years I've been quietly working on a project that is a culmination of everything I've ever learned. Web design, web development, entrepreneurship, freelancing, writing, management, marketing, teaching ... every interest that surrounds my work is encapsulated in 24,932 lines of code.

It's called AwesomeWeb - a simple freelance marketplace for people who do and need awesome work.

To launch AwesomeWeb, we've organized a competition around another value that is important to me, mentorship. Please check it out and let me know what you think.
We're giving 24 people the chance to discuss their online work, ambitions, and dreams with the Internet's most accomplished people. Enter to win an AwesomeWeb Scholarship!

This is something I think about often. Who's to say that one skill is more valuable than another? Why are people who make things for the web coveted while people who dedicate their lives to a physical craft go hungry? And which one requires more skill?
In today’s world, web developers have it all: money, perks, freedom, respect. But is there value in what we do?

I'm a sucker for well-written, humor-based, but point-driving content. This is part of the reason I don't like "startups."

Great explainer post on those 2-minute videos that everyone wants for their website.

On Monday, I attended a pre-award rehearsal dinner in Denver for some seriously impressive young entrepreneurs. I met lots of great people, but one stood out.

Santiago Gonzalez, a 14-year-old kid in his 3rd year at Colorado School of Mines, was a finalist. Last December, Rolling Stone wrote a 10-page article about him and what his life has been like as an exceptionally gifted kid (full article: http://cambridgeadvanced.org/wp-content/pdfs/rs-article-dec-2011.pdf, great read).

My takeaway: Before you can teach someone something you have to help them want to learn it. The difference between Santiago and other kids is that he obsessively wants to learn and understand everything.

I like when posts start with case studies.
Several years ago I was fortunate enough to work at Microsoft and take part in a fun usability study. We had two rooms, a one-way mirror, and a simple theory: If the start-up time of an application was faster, customers would have a much better impression of the overall experience (even if the application was [...]

I really like this post. The takeaway: Offer something that solves a painful problem and talk about the pain, not the benefits. Walk through the pain points as someone who has clearly experienced them.

I hadn't thought about three of the ten before. Definitely worth a read, even if you aren't a writer.

I started looking for health insurance as a self-employed business owner earlier this year. I spoke with one agent who told me that the process had become so complicated that she no longer offers it as a service. When I spoke with Reed Miller, from Shirazi Benefits, he walked me through the entire process over the phone. I'm happy to have insurance and know that it was set up right. Get a hold of them today for any of your insurance needs.
