The Doge’s Palace, Venice.
The Doge (Head of State) was chosen by a complex process & served for life. Although at an average age of 72, that wasn't overly long! A fabulous remuneration apparently avoided the temptation to succumb to bribes!!

A 17th century Venetian prisoners view
Their last brief glimpse of the lagoon and the Doge's Palace (right), before serving time in a cold dark cell (left).
P.S. See also my previous post in this collection.

The Bridge of Sighs, Venice.
Or, in Italian, Ponte dei Sospiri, built in the 17th century, linking the Doge's Palace (left) to the 'new prisons' (the old ones liable to flood - perhaps deliberately), where the 'luckier' prisoners took their last glimpse of the Venetian lagoon (behind me)...with a sigh.

No way out!
The current dilemma facing B&B business owners of beautiful period buildings like this. Regulations insist all doorways are ruined with inappropriate fire resistant replacements. Conservation officials rightly insist they are not disturbed.
Result. Business closes.

The Horseshoe Cloister, Windsor Castle
As seen on TV...today! Heavily restored in 1871, little of the original 1480’s building survives. It now houses offices and a library as well as some clergy accommodation, and is the route to the west door into St George’s Chapel. Pretty well known already, but ever more famous today, thanks to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Now Mr & Mrs Windsor I guess.

'The Long Walk' towards Windsor Castle, in the distance. It's a lot longer than this, if I could show what's behind me, and will be a bit more crowded than this on Saturday!
