There is a new forum on the block! Aleman has just set up a forum on the CBA website http://forum.craftbrewing.org.uk its still very early days, its using the default "skin" but given the issues with a certain big forum it has potential to be very busy very fast!

Well its the 1st use "in anger" of my experimental build HLT controller all being well it will turn on at 6:45 and provide me with water @ 77-78°C  when I get up at 7:30. I shall then manually raise the temp of my strike water to 79°C and mash in. I've dumped a kettle of hot water into the tun, a 60L thermopot, already so hopefully that will stay pretty warm and pre heat over night. Its a reasonably large grain bill @ 6.6kg to collect 27L of wort so a fun brew day. Its going to be an IPA the only thing still to sort out is what hops I'll be using.

Let us know how you get on with it.  While I may not use that unit, it looks like a great easy way to control the HLT, with less hassle than a pid/ssr unit.

Really looking forward to going to The Homebrew Forum's Spring Thing, which is basically a craft brewing weekend. The bar is supplied with homebrew (i.e. its free) and while many people bring beer its not a requirement. Its in May 16th-18th in Stafford with camping available. Further info http://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/springthing.php

Alas as at 2nd April the link is broken. The forum admin has ported the forum over  to new software and, for the moment, lost the links. Lets hope they sort it out soon!

Another brewday, an ESB steeped with a hit of Vic Secret. Hit an efficiency of 77% and all targets spot on.

When I went to dispose of the hops from today's brewing, this is the sight which met me when I opened the lid of the compost bin. 2 slow worms sitting happily on the last lot of hops I put there.

Equipment  -

My new HLT controller, total cost about £20 not including the wire. Works OK, has a timer with battery backed up clock and can switch 3.6kW. Not perfect but it should allow me to let the HLT heat up before I get up.

I'll be bringing some along to the next BCB meeting :) To be fair its still a bit young but I'm out of stocks and tired of commercial beers. It was served through a beer engine with sparkler which helped out with the head.

The outstanding Ofsted rating is well deserved, both of our children went to Trinity and my daughter had the opportunity to go to Romania as part of charity work done by the school. The school prepares their pupils well not only in an academic way but providing with the life skills needed to achieve their full potential. Having been to many events over the years, such as concerts and assemblies, I have always been struck by how happy the children are and the levels of self confidence shown. The attitude to teaching there is very much vocational rather than "just a job" and the teachers seem to love teaching our kids. All in all Trinity produces well rounded youngsters ready to move into secondary education, the down side is that very few secondary schools will live up to the standards they have become accustomed to.
