Smokeless Tobacco Just As Harmful As Cigarettes | Newberg Family Dental

By now you don’t need Newberg, OR dentist Dr. Jennifer McLeod to tell you just how dangerous tobacco use is to both your long-term oral and overall health. Many Americans have already gotten the message, which is why the number of smokers continues to drop each year.

In 1965, 44 percent of American adults smoked, according the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That number has dropped to just over 12 percent of adults, as of 2014. While younger Americans are more likely to smoke than older adults, this decades long trend in cessation promises to offer a healthier country well into the future.

However, while smoking receives much of the recognition as a major oral health hurdle, the impact of chewing tobacco on the mouth is often overlooked by many. Chewing tobacco contains a variety of highly dangerous chemical that can cause numerous adverse health problems, up to and including cancer.

Can Our Teeth Repair Themselves? | Newberg Family Dental

Teeth might one day repair themselves using their own stem cells, all but eliminating the need for Newberg dental care patients to receive fillings, reports the results of a new study.

While still in the laboratory stage, a new method tested in mice indicates that a drug called Tideglusib can actually stimulate teeth into self-repairing the effects of tooth decay. Researchers claim that by activating stem cells found in teeth, they can stimulate a limited ability for self-repair. That natural ability to repair is greatly enhanced with the use of Tideglusib, reports researchers from King’s College London.

Restoration from within using only natural material allows for the full structure and vitality of a tooth to be maintained. If proven successful in humans, this method could herald a new era of regenerative dentistry, where new dental treatments use an understanding of the physiology and biology of the tooth to stimulate self-repair.

As your family and cosmetic dentist in Newberg, Dr. Jennifer McLeod strives to protect the long-term oral health of all of her patients. As most of our patients already know, tooth decay and gum disease rank as the two biggest threats their oral health faces on a daily basis. Fortunately, you can significantly lower your risk of these two oral health problems by brushing and flossing daily.

Did you know that a recent study found that people with high levels of a particular oral bacterium have a higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer?

While you might think that a brilliantly bright smile is strictly reserved for the celebrities you see on TV and in magazines, your Newberg cosmetic dentist Dr. Jennifer McLeod wants all of her patients to have the whitest smile possible. However, to enjoy a great looking smile, it’s important that you realize the causes of tooth discoloration. That way, you’ll have the knowledge needed to help fight against this unsightly problem.

Most causes of tooth discoloration fall into one of two categories – intrinsic and extrinsic stains. Tooth discoloration can also be caused from a variety of underlying health factors, so make sure to schedule an appointment with Dr. McLeod to have the current state of your smile assessed prior to beginning any whitening treatments.

While wildly considered a healthy beverage alternative, many patients of Newberg family dental care provider Dr. Morgan don’t know that sparkling water can cause dental erosion. By now most of Dr. Morgan’s patients should know that certain foods and drinks could be potentially harmful to our mouths and bodies. Sodas, for example, have been linked to diabetes, obesity, tooth decay, depression and more. Even diet beverages have been found to possess harmful effects.
