Thursday On Deck: HAS IT BEEN A WHILE SINCE YOU'VE WRITTEN ESSAYS?

Students at online universities usually are not fresh out of high school. They tend to have a few year of life experience under their belts, they have more work experience, etc. They are a little more "seasoned."

When they return to school to finish their education, they often become painfully aware that their writing skills might be a tad rusty.

It seems only natural a lot of folks would feel that way.

And when you try that first paper, it might be a little rougher to compose than you initially thought.

Here's the thing. It isn't just that students are rusty. There is another VERY important reason they might struggle at first. (Pssst. Don't worry. You will have plenty of opportunities to practice.)

Read what David Plaut explains about college writing. http://ow.ly/LNd930jVp7v

It will give you a good idea of how you will be expected to write in college. Keep in mind, that while college-level writing is at an advanced skill level, it is okay if your paper is not perfect the first time.

The instructors and evaluators and focused mostly on your ideas and your understanding. But if your writing is not clear, then the support for your thesis may not be apparent enough.

If you are ready to try your hand at online college, check out our degrees. Then apply to speak with an admissions counselor.

Wednesday Wheelhouse: Watch our for the CHEATER CHASERS

When it comes to writing papers and taking tests, the temptation to find a shortcut...or maybe cheat just a little...can be almost overwhelming.

According to an article in U.S. News & World Report, the temptation is even stronger for many students attending school online - no one is standing right in the room with them when they study or take a test, after all.

Read this blog post about how New Charter University is helping students do their best work...and avoid compromising their integrity.

Tuesday Under Way: SHORTCUTS FOR APA WRITING STYLE

Since college is often the first (and only) place that many people will need to use the writing style set forth by the American Psychological Association (APA), the method is often new...and can be rather confusing. When preparing a paper, it can be downright painful.

Read this blog where we share a couple of our favorite resources getting APA style right!

Thursday On Deck: WHAT INTERNATIONAL (and domestic) STUDENTS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT COLLEGE WRITING WHEN ENROLLED IN U.S. UNIVERSITIES

Research and writing are a very large part of the college educational methods in the U.S. First and foremost, it is a way that professors can determine the breadth and depth of a student's comprehension of the material.

For many international students, studying and writing in English provides one challenge. The American standard for writing your own original thoughts, and properly including support from outside resources poses quite another.

We understand that in educational systems around the world, there are a variety of views on how best to share and honor the ideas and work of someone else.

In the U.S. educational system (even online programs), there is a strict standard for how to include the work of someone in your paper that gives credit where credit is due. Not following this standard is considered plagiarism and carries penalties with it.

We encourage all students (because even some U.S. natives are unclear about this practice) to read this helpful article about writing standards at U.S. colleges.

At New Charter University, we use both technology and human resources to monitor plagiarism. While most plagiarism is unintentional, repeat offenses can carry severe consequences.

Our intention is not to scare or intimidate students from pursuing their dream of a college degree. Please know that we are here to help students develop the knowledge and skills they need to succeed - including APA writing style.

Tuesday Underway: WHY APA STYLE?

For most people, college is one of the only places that they learn and use APA (American Psychological Association) style for their writing assignments. But why is that?

From the student perspective, it often feels like a bunch of red tape and needless "hoops" to jump through.

After all, how does ensuring that your paper is double-spaced with 1 inch margins, and properly formatted references demonstrate one's mastery of a subject?

In the U.S., this writing style standard has more purposes, than just showing a professor that you can "follow the rules."

Here are a few good reasons to follow APA style.
