Heading off soon to Torquay in Devon for the funeral of my cousin Dave Facey, missing in the sea during the storms and whose body was recovered on March 26. First visit to Torquay in many years, but today's not a day for thinking about a nice trip to the seaside.

David was taken in tragic circumstances, and his loss is felt by many people: family, friends and colleagues from the past. RIP, Dave.

Two highlight topics from this week's FIR 751, just published:

* Serious reading is on the decline as the brain adapts to scanning: what does this means for communicators?

Enjoy the show!

FIR 751 is up! In this week's episode:

New FIR Interview with Critical Mass coming, no reports this week from Dan York (get well soon, Dan!) or Michael Netzley;

Quick News: FTC investigates a Pinterest contest, Staples offers 3D printing, journalists mining Whisper, 44% of Twitter accounts have never sent a tweet; Ragan promo;

News That Fits: A journalist's jaundiced view of PR's value highlights the good, the bad and the ugly of PR; serious reading on the decline as the brain adapts to scanning; Media Monitoring Minute with CustomScoop; listener comments; Igloo Software promo; last week on the FIR Podcast Network; are social media pundits hypocrites when it comes to engagement?; music from Matt Shenk; and more...

I have to say, I spend all day every day at a computer, and I have NEVER been unable to read a novel. I can read when I have migraines that prevent me from looking at a computer screen.

A quarter-page ad by the Bank of England in yesterday’s Telegraph caught my eye primarily because it contained a QR code. The print ad informs you that the £50 note featuring an engraved portrait of Sir John Houblon on the reverse side will be withdrawn…

The websites of most musicians adhere to a highly predictable template. There’s a bio, a page hosting some music, another with photos and video, a tour schedule, and a merchandise store. In developing the recently-launched Jerry Garcia website, the team…
