Security and privacy of data and systems in the cloud remains a top worry for 70% of IT professionals worldwide, up from 63% in 2015, according to a new Cloud Security Survey by Netwrix. The top three cloud security concerns in 2016 are unauthorized access (69%), malware (37%) and denial of service (DoS) attacks (34%).

Internet of Things-powered botnets are set to cause havoc this Christmas season as attackers ramp up their activities even further after a busy third quarter, according to Akamai.

The DDoS mitigation firm claimed in its State of the Internet / Security report that attacks increased 71% over Q3 2015, while those greater than 100Gbps increased 138% from the same period last year.

Some Blu smartphone owners got a hidden feature they weren’t quite expecting.

It turned out software from a Chinese company was transmitting all of their text messages and other data to China every 72 hours. The vulnerability was discovered by a Kryptowire, an American enterprise security firm.

According to a New York Times report it wasn’t clear if the information went beyond the recipient of Shanghai Adups Technology Company, but it impacted Blu R1 HD and other phones.

Security researchers have discovered a new #ransomware variant designed to harvest social and comms data and scan for evidence of child exploitation and pirated content in a bid to guarantee payment of the ransom.

Proofpoint explained that “Ransoc” has more in common with the “Police Locker” malware popular between 2012 and 2014 than crypto-ransomware which dominates today.

A newly discovered form of #ransomware scrapes the social media accounts and local files of victims in order to tailor a customised demand, and threatens court action if it isn't paid.

Dubbed '#Ransoc' by cybersecurity researchers at Proofpoint due to its connection with social media including Facebook, LinkedIn, and Skype, this ransomware represents yet another evolution of the malicious software which has boomed during 2016.
