Chartwell LS3/5A BBC Licensed Monitor Loudspeaker

The LS3/5A was produced by British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Designs Department in response to detail changes in the performance of the drive units that were originally chosen for the LS3/5 as designed by BBC Research and Development. It is the most well-known of all the BBC loudspeakers, and remains the compact loudspeaker of choice for many today.

As you would expect, the Chartwell version, engineered by Derek Hughes, includes authentic details such as the perforated metal tweeter grille, thick felt pads surrounding the tweeter, and Velcro rather than our usual hidden magnets to secure the grille frame. The cabinet uses 12mm panels and a fixed rear panel, according to BBC Designs Department’s specification.

Chartwell are the only company to have ever manufactured the LS3/5, and now also the LS3/5A, audiophiles are now in the unique position of being able to hear for themselves the differences that these changes made to the design originally intended by BBC R&D.

DreamVision Siglos X-TRA 4K UHD HDR 3D Home Cinema Projectors

The DreamVision Siglos X-TRA can be ordered in any custom RAL paint colour to perfectly match your interior design.

The small details that make a big difference

Each unit is double checked and calibrated by DreamVision’s video engineer who has over 20 years experience to obtain a perfect picture quality and finish. DreamVision also chose the most advanced manufacturing process and luxurious materials chosen for their extreme rigidity and performance in heat and noise absorption (noise level below 20 dB).

Raising the picture quality standards

The new three-chip system used on the Siglos X-TRA Series can accommodate high resolutions up to 3,840 x 2,160 pixels (also known as 4K). Using the latest technological innovations, DreamVision has achieved a breathtaking contrast ratios through an improved light engine (400,000:1 for Siglos 1 X-TRA, 1,300 000:1 for Siglos 2 X-TRA and an amazing 1,600 000:1 for the Siglos 3 X-TRA).

Dedicated to sharp pictures and precision, the Siglos X-TRA come with a new and improved Low Latency mode that drastically improves the thrill when playing video games, viewing virtual reality show or experiencing simulations. The Low Latency mode is seconded by the Crystal Motion® algorithm which is a frame interpolation method that brings an immersive experience to sport, concerts or TV shows. In any circumstances, the picture becomes dramatically realistic.

Versatility and Ease of Installation

In addition to its impressive performance, the Siglos X-TRA projectors are also easy to install. The input panel, concealed on the back of the projector, offers quick access to a wide array of connections. The 2 x zoom, combined with an electronic lens aperture, will allow for perfect adjustment in virtually any residential installations. With the fully motorised and remote controlled lens, the installation becomes easier and faster. The Siglos X-TRA Series will accommodate almost any kind of setup thanks to the ±80% vertical shift and the ±34% horizontal shift. And if that is not enough, the projector can be put aside further thanks to the crisp, high quality Keystone.

Improved High Dynamic Range content support

The Siglos X-TRA has many colour space presets precisely calibrated to most current standards such as BT.709 or DCI-P3. It is also capable of covering more than 80% of BT.2020 color gamut. Thanks to its two HDMI 2.0b, the Siglos X-TRA supports the latest UHD/4K recommendations and Perceptual Quantization gamma curves but also the more conservative HDR formats such as Hybrid Log gamma used by BBC, NHK broadcasts.

When it comes to HDR content, any lack of precision would lead to disastrous results on the screen. This is why the HDR support is continuously improved and now the Siglos X-TRA has a new dedicated colour profile that can be finely tuned and it can also auto-detect the MaxCLL and MaxFLL HDR parameters so the picture is much more natural and precise, optimising the 2,000 ANSI lumens output to obtain even brighter HDR pictures with default settings.

With the Siglos X-TRA Series, 3D projection at home now becomes a reality

For the DreamVision R&D team it has been very important for 3D to be done the right way without sacrificing 2D performances. Therefore, DreamVision is the only brand to offer the choice of two technologies: Active 3D and Passive 3D. Active 3D is about pure performance, whereas Passive 3D is more about comfort, brightness and cost-effectiveness. DreamVision B.E.S.T Passive 3D solutions are brighter than any equivalent DLP® solution on the market and our newest Very B.E.S.T Passive 3D kit is even better.

Chartwell LS6 Monitor Loudspeaker

From customer feedback on the Chartwell LS3/5 and Graham Audio LS5/9, a speaker that sits between these models was developed that has the smoothness of both with the extension and power handling of the LS5/9, but in a more compact design.
The result is the Chartwell LS6, designed by Derek Hughes, it is a 17-litre speaker using a custom built long throw 18cm Polypropylene driver, giving similar low frequency power handling as the LS5/9, together with the same 19mm tweeter that has been used in the LS3/5.
A large rear mounted port provides deep effortless bass, while keeping the front aspect compact so as to blend aesthetically in domestic environments.
A sophisticated crossover network blends the units and equalises the overall response for optimum performance in free space. A switch on the front baffle adjusts the tweeter level to +1 or +2dB. This can be useful for situations where the listening position is off axis to restore the response to optimum.
The cabinet uses the classic BBC "thin wall" construction, where the panels are mass-loaded to ensure that resonances are moved away from the critical mid-range region, and a layer of Rockwool held in place by fabric provides air damping. Hand-matched veneers are applied and finished to a very high standard. The grille is carefully designed to minimise diffraction effects and is held in place by concealed rare-earth magnets.

Chartwell LS6 Specifications:

System 2-way reflex loading.
Enclosure Thin wall damped construction.
Amplifier Power 50–150 watts unclipped programme.
Sensitivity 87dB/2.83v/1m.
Max Output Over 100dB for a pair at 2m.
Nominal Imp 8 ohms.
Response 45-20kHz +/-2dB.
Dimensions 37H x 24W x 26D (not including terminals).
Weight 9.5 kg.
HF level Switch 0, +1, +2dB.
Bass/Midrange Long throw 165mm Polypropylene.
HF 19mm dome tweeter.

Graham Audio LS5/8 BBC Licensed Grade One Monitor Loudspeaker

Designed in conjunction with Derek Hughes and Volt loudspeakers the high resolution two way passive loudspeaker features a bespoke 12 inch bass/mid unit and legendary Audax tweeter matched to a handcrafted crossover built by Derek Hughes to exacting standards. The project was conceived to reintroduce the famous BBC design as a follow on from the Graham Audio LS5/9 monitor speaker that has received worldwide acclaim.

The design principle was to maintain the high class midrange and balance of the LS5/9 but with greater extension, power handling and authority. The same continuity of sound is available between the models and engineers can swap between the two different speakers with confidence during recording and mastering.

Chartwell LS3/5 BBC Licensed Monitor Loudspeaker by Graham Audio.

Graham Audio is pleased to announce the purchase of the CHARTWELL and SWISSTONE Companies. The famous Chartwell brand were historically regarded as the finest builders of the BBC LS3/5A speakers and their products are the most sort after of all the licensees who built the brilliant LS3/5A.

Derek Hughes father Spencer Hughes was part of the original team of engineers who worked on the development of the LS3/5 only 20 pairs were ever made and only very few images exist, most of which Derek has. Nobody else is better suited than Graham Audio working with Derek to bring the LS3/5 to the market for the very first time.

The LS3/5 was never commercially available, and was only launched as the LS3/5A after Kef stopped making the driver they were using. The original driver was preferred and sonically superior and the team had to change the crossover and tweeter to suit the new driver that is why it became the LS3/5A.

Graham Audio are the first and only company to be granted a license for the LS3/5.

Sugden Audio A21 & A21SE Signature Pure Class 'A' Integrated Amplifiers
Following on from the development of the Masterclass FPA-4 and Sapphire, Sugden has recognised the potential of utilising some of this technology in the A21 and A21SE and created the A21 Signature Series.
Upgrades include installation of low inductance components in the Class ‘A’ output stage and subtle enhancements to front panel ergonomics. The use of low inductance components provides a stronger technical and sonic performance and are welcome improvements on the previous generation A21a and A21SE models.
Class ‘A’ amplifiers require special knowledge and different skills to conventional amplifier designs. With careful attention to critical areas of the Class ‘A’ circuit, noticeable improvements can be made. Installing new high quality, high specification components has allowed the release of even more potential from the single ended Class ‘A’ design. Separation and definition of instruments is one key area of improvement and low frequency information is cleaner and faster.
The Signature front panels now benefit from clear input identification, as a result of feedback from customers of previous A21 models. This provides labeling for line level inputs and phono. A new style control knob has also been included, this features a full length cut out so it is easy to identify the exact position of both the volume control and input selector. The new control knob design provides a more attractive style and smoother feel due to a contoured front face.
