I think this post is quite naive in terms of understanding what could be happening to the browser software over time. We will have many more layers in a commercial browser like chrome than you would have in Lynx. Not only protection from bad-guys, but other technology to allow pages to be cached, script to be compiled and stored in fast memory to enable the page to load quicker, or graphics to made available sooner. Not only that you have a multitude of compatibility issues which the browser will be altering on the fly.

In terms of complaining about how Visual Studio ran in 16mb in the early 2000s that is not an equivalent comparison either.

I can't see the issue with software taking up the space that has been made available to it. I'd rather do that than go back to the x86 register hacks that used to be prevalent to manage memory back twenty years ago.

There are sites that are small, there are sites which are big, and there is software that is compressed. But taking an arbitrary footprint as proof of decline in something or other is a fallacy.
