In May 2018, NDNU faculty member Miriam Zimmerman visited the town of Buer, a suburb of Gelsenkirchen, Germany where her father and other family members fled the Nazis in 1937. The occasion was the placing of Stolpersteine, also known as "stumbling stones". These plaques, designed by renowned artist Gunter Demnig, commemorate homes formerly occupied by Jewish, Roma, mentally challenged, and gay and lesbian victims of Nazi persecution. The plaques in Buer mark the house where Zimmerman's father Werner Löwenstein grew up before he escaped Germany and made his way to the United States. Zimmerman teaches a class in Holocaust Studies at #NDNU. #FacultyFriday #Stolpersteine #Germany

Last week the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, California hosted an Ice Cream Social at the Province Center to honor Sr. Dorothy Stang's memory on the occasion of her birthday. This year they had a special guest join them for their annual celebration, her brother! We had a chance to sit down with Tom Stang to reflect on the life and legacy of Sr. Dorothy and the impact she made here as a member of our #NDNUAlumni community.

Hey class of 2018, what’s more exciting than graduating from college? Graduating from college AND getting a gift from Bill Gates. Mr.Gates is celebrating this year’s graduating class by giving away a free copy of his favorite book of 2018—Factfulness by Hans Rosling—to all new college graduates. Any 2018 graduate is eligible and the redemption process is simple. Go to https://b-gat.es/grad-gift and complete a short registration and validation process to access the full book in .epub format. The book focuses on the importance of a fact-based worldview and emphasizes how personal instincts can influence the way people see the world. It’s an invaluable read for the next-generation of leaders. Happy reading, Argos! #NDNU #NDNU2018 #NDNUAlumni

The George M. Keller Teaching Excellence Award seeks to recognize excellence in teaching by full-time faculty at NDNU. The selection process includes student nomination letters, with attention given to a faculty member’s teaching contribution, ability to motivate students, leadership in teaching, success as an academic advisor and other outstanding contributions to the learning process at NDNU.

Congratulations to Dr. Helen Marlo, Professor of Clinical Psychology, the winner of the 2018 George M. Keller Teaching Excellence Award.

“Dr. Marlo amazes us each day. Dr. Marlo is the kindest, most understanding person one could ever meet. Dr. Marlo can bring real-world examples to anything we learn. I've been a graduate student at Johns Hopkins and Stanford, learning from dozens of very fine professors but I'd put Dr. Marlo right up there among the best I've ever had,” read one student's nomination letter. #NDNU #ClinicalPsychology #1851Reasons #FacultyFriday
