Ms. Tanzilah Shaidi of Pakistan (right) receives a graduation certificate from the leadership of her political party during NDI's Polling Agent Training Program in February 2018. NDI trained political party polling agent master trainers ahead of Pakistan’s July 25, 2018, general election. The trainings also provided a platform for party members like Shaidi to meet party leaders and share their opinions. Shaidi is the first person of African descent to serve as a parliamentarian in the history of #Pakistan. #photooftheweek

“We need to build an environment that is more responsive to the needs of young activists, and the challenge should not be for the young person to change – it is for communities and institutions to serve them better and encourage their activism.” - NDI expert Rachel Mims in #YouthVoices Read more: https://buff.ly/2KSAfNx #YouthDay2018 #SafeSpaces

Happy international #youthday! To celebrate, we’ve launched a new blog series, titled “Youth Voices: Stories of Political Participation.” Today’s youth are at a critical juncture. The current young generation — the largest in global history — is disproportionately affected by unemployment, insufficient access to education, violent conflict and a number of other challenges. Surging youth activism and leadership has the potential to change the world. Accordingly, young people are increasingly being recognized as indispensable agents for sustainable development and the source of a demographic dividend. #YouthVoices

A delegation of 11 leaders representing nine political parties and one oversight institution traveled from Nairobi, Kenya to Washington, DC to participate in a one week study mission. The delegates attended a variety of panels and meetings focused on comprehensive party coordination and development across multiple levels of government, fundraising techniques, and best practices for building sustainable and inclusive party membership. By interacting with experts, practitioners and members from various levels of political party leadership, the delegation was exposed to both the successes and challenges of the political party system in the United States. In our #PhotoOfTheWeek, participants pose with NDI’s Vice President Shari Bryan (sixth from right) and other NDI staff at the Institute’s headquarters.
