A question we are often asked is, are the extreme cold temperatures we experienced this past winter good or bad? There is some research out which reports the extreme cold temperatures will control some of the exotic pest that we treat for each year. One example is Hemlock Woolly Adelgid. A non-native pest which attacks Hemlock trees. This insect was imported from Asia and is not acclimated with the cold hard freezes that we experienced this past winter. Recently, local studies have recorded a drop in this pest population, when we have consecutive days below freezing. I know I can’t wait to get out and inspect our properties to see how the pest populations faired over the winter. We will keep you updated on our discoveries. Other pests may not be affected by the colder temperatures and we will continue to monitor and treat for them.
