Today in Native American History: On January, 13 1969 Evelyn “Billie” Frechette made her way to the Spirit World from a losing battle with cancer.

Billie was born in Neopit, Wisconsin in 1907 to a French father and a Native American mother. She lived on the Menominee Reservation and attended school until she was 13, when she moved to a boarding school for Native Americans in Flandreau, South Dakota.

She was known for being an Actress, Singer, and even a criminal. She fell in love with the bank robber John Dillinger, while she never helped him with any robberies she was arrested for “harboring a criminal” in 1934. Dillinger was convinced by the girlfriend of gang member John Hamilton, that he would be killed if he attempted to rescue Frechette.

Dillinger tried to assist in Frechette’s release from prison, even paying his own lawyer to take her case. The two never reunited, Dillinger was shot and killed outside the Biograph Theater in 1934.

Billie was released from prison in 1936. She then toured with Dillinger’s family performing in a play called “Crime Doesn’t Pay.”

“I will not make a single penny out of this because that has never been my intent,” he said. “I want the land to go back to the Lakota/Dakota/Nakota people who are the true inheritors of the land and if they choose to build a museum or whatever on the land that will be up to them to decide.”
